Fuel Economy - BAH!!!

    Hi,

    I've jost gotten me a 93 FP. Riding two up I've found I'm getting about 130 miles to the tank is this :bs: should I be getting more? I don't wind it up often and this is just running around the country lanes.

    I've ordered a new air filter from wemoto can this help or am I just being a fool.

    Based on your avatar, I take it that a 93 FP is the same as a 4th gen VFR750? What does FP stand for? Just curiosity from a Yank is all!

    I know several 4th gen guys on here routinuely get 40-50 MPG...so your MPG is low to me. A new air filter is always good idea, and changing to the oil (not gonna help MPG) but at least you will feel better about it. Has this bike had any engine/exhaust mods? Have the carbs been rejetted? Has the bike sat for long periods? Do the brakes drag (push it around in neutral with the bike off and see if it is hard to push, or you hear excessive rub/drag)? I think that replacing the spark plugs (and checking the color of them) would not be a bad idea either.

    Oh, and how many miles are on this bike? I will say, that different engines, will get different MPG. Sometimes, I swear that some engines just are put together such a way, that is makes them much more fuel efficient than others. Some 5th gen owners get 50 MPG...I have never seen better than 42 on the freeway. I get around 36-38 average around town, however, I do have a heavy right wrist. Riding style is a big factor as well.

    Hi,

    Thanks for replying derstuka yes UK refer to the different models by their suffix.

    I've just got this bike, it seems really easy to roll around, it does seem pretty standard. I'll have a look at the plugs, may as well replace them, I've hear one is difficult to get at, do you have any tips?

    3rd gen (i.e. 90 - 93) is similar to the 4th gen, but not the same. Frame and plastics are different, though one might coerce the rear plastic from a 4th gen to fit on a 3rd gen. As for riding 2-up, your mpg will drop. How much gas are you using in 130 miles? How much are you using when it's just you. Air filter, tune up, and valve check are in order (depending on how many miles are on the bike).

    Tips for getting that one tough plug..............small hands. lol

    Hi,

    Thanks for all your tips, I've replaced the air filter first but as it's always raining here in the UK I've yet to try it.

    I think I've attached a photo, it looked real mucky, what do you think?

    yeah, that's pretty dirty, but I don't think that alone would make your mileage that bad if you are not giving it hell every cahnce you get. try the new plugs and running some carb cleaner through the next few tanks and see if things get a little better for you...

    I regularly get 200 miles + (>46mpg) from a 22 litre tank on my 2002 (6th gen?) VTEC. I know its a completely diferent bike and comparisons shouldn't really be drawn, but I'd be sh*tting my pants if I was getting 130 miles from a tank! These 'ere Yanks think they've got bad fuel prices!! Wanna check out the cost over here - we're paying £1.15 a litre atm. 1 gallon = 4.55 litres, so that makes it £5.23 a gallon (or $9.82)!!!

    That's a 3G bike, note the vents in the frame. UK bikes have an additional suffix in the model designation:

    3G
    1991 - VFR750FM
    1992 - VFR750FN
    1993 - VFR750FP
    4G
    1994 - VFR750FR
    1995 - VFR750FS
    1996 - VFR750FT
    1997 - VFR750FV

    The suffix is the same as the 10th digit in the VIN.

    Another factor could be the gas you are using. I tried all 3. 87 89 and 92 octane. The 92 octane gave the best mileage with the max i saw around 42 on the highway. I'm not sure what gas is available where you are. I remember on my last visit to England there were only 2 available, 89 and 93 octane or something.

    I have found that if you ride on the right side of the road, your gas mileage is far better than if you ride on the left.:wedgie:

    However, its probably more to do with a complete lack of corners on that particular side of the road :unsure:

    In the US, a gallon is 3.78 liter. So price would be £4.35 (8.17$)

    That's pretty expensive and that's the reason why you only have small cars!

    If you start the motor, your mileage will deteriorate significantly. And isn't that thing difficult to pedal?

    (Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you said 130 mpg.)

    Good looking bike!
    I had a '93 and it averaged 42mp (American) g, and a bit better on long trips.
    How many miles on your bike? It there are not many, then the bike sat around a lot and the carbs are probably gummed up. I let my '93 sit for two months once, saving my tires for a track day, and when the time came to go it not only ran terrible, but I was getting about 26 mpg on the road! No amount of carb cleaner ever got it right. I think your carbs will need a proper cleaning. And a sync!

    idk man, my 2nd gen (1987) gets about 130-140m on a tank without goin' to reserve... I honestly have no idea if that's good or bad, but it outdoes my friends' cars, and my family's bikes. My brother's '85 V-max gets 100m to a tank, and at 101 he's dead on the road. similar situation with my pops' older Goldwing. :focus:

    Prolly best to listen to these guys, they know their shit :thumbsup:

    Man o man, that's way lousy, you should see at the least 200 per tank. I'd look into the choke system, but before you do that pop the plugs and get a good read on em, that will tell you if your rich or not, air filter will play into this a bit but not that much, two up definitely will drop it a bit too. also down town stop and go does it in as well, try a good long haul. put in some good hot fuel, even try some full synthetic oil too. I'm seeing 50mpg fairly easy.

    the octane levels over here (UK) are 95, 98 and (in some BP petrol stations) 102
