I have a 95 VFR with about 40K mi on it. Two weeks ago about 5 mi from the house, after only riding about 25 mi, the bike died on the highway. Jumped it off and got it home. Went and got a new battery, Sears Die Hard, and installed it. Today after about 30 mi the bike dies again. I was close to a friends house so it is sitting in their garage now. Does this sound like the stator is shot and not charging back to the battery?

More than likely it is your regulator/rectifier refered to as R/R. It could also be wire connections to it. Check all connectors for corrosion and your harness for possible fraied spots(shorts). Put a good solid overnight charge on the battery and see if the problem is gone. If it still occurs I would look into the output of the stator, a honda service manual should have instructions on what readings you should get with a meter while testing.

the easiest, quickest check is to put a voltmeter across the battery terminals with engine running at about 5k rpm.....

you should have about 13.5 volts.

Go to Yuasa Batteries, Inc. for everything you ever wanted to know about testing and charging batteries. Click on literature then click on Yuasa technical manual.
