Apparently there is a special tool I have to get to hold the cam while I adjust the valves? Any idea on where to find it or if there is a part number I can look up? Do I really need it? The valves are starting to get noisy so I'm hoping they just need to be adjusted. I bought the bike a year agoand it now has 50,000kms on it butI dont know when there were done last.

one of the problems with adjusting valves on high-mile bikes is that the bottoms of the adjusting screws have usually been beaten flat, but they started out round.

this makes clearance adjustments hard to measure, and it's probably best to replace the screw ( if they're available) because the new adjustment will change quickly if you are using a screw with a flattened tip.

I was waiting for squirrel to chime in....I have seen a couple of different ways that this can be done that other mechanics swear by but, to be sure there are many pitfalls to this and I would use caution if you are to tackle this yourself.

I'm a hands on guy and this bike is supposed to be home mechanic friendly ( so I have read ). I have built lots of car top ends and with the locking screws (polylocks on cars) so I'm not afraid of diving into a cylinder head (or heads). I found in the book V-Force that you dont have to use the cam holder, or am I way off base.

Don't bother using the tool, in fact it's probably better if you don't. I don't use it and have never had a single issue, ever.

Ok so I have checked the clearance and there seem to be a problem. Do I need to run tighter clearance since I'm not using the cam tool? the gaps seem to be at .003 on most and absolute 0 on the exhaust on cylinders 1 and 3. the book says .006.

Follow the manual, it was printed before the "tool" existed.
