    VF500 petcock Filters

So I'm switching tanks. The old one is SUPER beat up from all the welding and leak fixes and patching it has gone through.

I got a much nicer one going in.

But when I removed the Petcock I decided I looked in one of the openings and noticed some debris inside....so I decided to unscrew the bottom.

There was alot of crap in there....but no filters. Shouldn't there be filter screens in there?

I tried ordering them and the sock from Honda but both are discontinued. Any idea where to get 'em?

Should be a screen, u can see it on the parts diagram. Might have to make one yourself.....

It looks like the 'downstream' screen ('Filter Cup', part no. 06, OEM no. 16959-461-751) is not used on the 1986 model. This part is only used on the '84/'85 and is still available.

The 'upstream' screen is NLA for the '86 ('Screen Set', part no. 03, OEM no. 16952-MM5-005 ). This part is also NLA for '84/'85 (OEM no.16952-KE8-005).

Time for an in-line fuel filter?

Wow......so the bike has been running for who knows how many years without a fuel filter OR any filtration in the petcock.

    Jeeeze.

I was looking at getting a fuel filter put in but I am unsure where.
Thinking of putting two small ones in the 2 lines that tee off the main fuel line from the Petcock.

I think is definitely time to inspect the carburetors and to add an in-line fuel filter then. Pingel makes a nice one:

    Ooooh. Those look nice.

Too bad I haven't a clue the size of the hose off the Petcock or the 2 small hose it tee's into.

I have an '86 VF 500 petcock on my workbench now, and it has the screen #6........

Fuel outlet size is 7/16" or about 13 mm.

some here, acknowledged experts, have suggested that any filter used on an '86 be a metal type, not a paper filtration element cuz, without a fuel pump, the extra resistance to flow could result in a problem.

    Thank you for the post.

Interesting, the '86 Parts Diagram (above) does not list this screen as part of the petcock assembly (the list jumps from '05' to '07'). The 'Filter Cup' (part '06') does show up on the '84/'85 parts list. The filter cup is a metal screen on my '84.

Squirrel....the outlet of the Petcock is 7/16"?

Any idea what size the little hoses are? (The ones that the 7/16" hose tee's into?)

    Maybe a parts # mixup ??

looks like the inner diameter of the filter cup ('86) is about 25 mm, so if the earlier 500s had the same size it seems the filter screen would fit OK........

Cup acts as a trap for sediment as it flows past, screen not necessary. Cup should be removed, inspected, and cleaned periodically, as contents will show problems with tank interior. Rust flakes are a serious warning.

Just tried. No orders outside the US :-(

I really liked the 1 inlet into 2 outlet. I would've just replaced the tee off the large hose from the Petcock.

    Thanks.

I e-mailed them and they got back pretty quickly. No internet orders for Canada.

I have some small see through bike filters I'll try out.

So Pingel asked me to call and order from them. The cost of Long Distance charges plus shipping wasn't worth the filter.

I got 2 clear filters from my local Honda dealership and spliced them into the two lines that come off the main Petcock hose.

Bike started up fine and still sounds strong.

    The filter "sock" was unavailable.

    Thank you for the post.

I'm not familiar with the '86 fuel delivery system - are there two fuel supply lines running from the petcock to the carburetors?

Not needing the fuel strainer makes sense as this only shows on the parts list for the '84/'85.

Sadly the filter screen is one more part to add to the NLA list. It does look like your sintered bronze filters have you well covered though.

    Your welcome. :-)

There is one large hose that comes off the petcock. Then it splits into 2 smaller hoses that go to the carbs.

Interesting, this must have been a redesign for the '86 model year when they went to a gravity fed system. There is only one fuel supply line from the petcock to the carburetors on my '84 (originally issued with a fuel pump).
