So I'm doing my fork seals on my 90 VFR750 and need to get some fork oil.
I believe the Service manual calls for "Honda Pro Suspension Fluid SS-7" so I stop by the Honda dealership to pick some up and they tell me they've never heard of it. They look up the bike in some sort of cross reff chart but it doesn't have a listing for that bike. So they tell me I "should" be able to use 15 weight but I can tell the guy is just guessing.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to use for a 1990 VFR750?

I swear by Bel-Ray products. I use 7 weight by them, Heres the kicker though, I was bored one day and swapped out the fork oil with Honda 5 weight and ended up blowing out my fork seals. They did have 70,000 or so on them so WTF. My old race bike I used Race-tech 20 weight I believe. If its not broke dont fix it are good words to live by. Oh and at least we have drain plugs on the bottom of our fork legs, unlike todays bikes. When I did the seals I painted my fork legs and man it was cruddy in there, I used a whole can of brake cleaner/anyway cheers...

I would go with a belray (or any brand) 10 or 15wt, the extra viscosity gives a little more (much needed) damping on the front end and more feel.

I know its a different year, but the service manual for my 87 VFR recommended 15 wt, that's what I used and no problems after 2k more miles

    Good luck man

yeh I would experiment with it. They do have drain plugs so its not a major big deal. I have Race-Tech fork springs and the gold valves that I installed 15 years ago in the bike so my front feels different than a stock one. 5 weight Honda was way light though, amazing I felt the difference right away and that same day my fork seals blew. Ok, cheers

I think a rear shock is in my future for the 93 I picked up. I wish I could get the 93 to ride as well as my 91, it time it will. Cheers

So while we are talking fork oil can somebody tell me how much oil goes in an 86 750 I stripped the forks and fitted new seals today. I also just found a couple of washers that I'm not sure where they came from, they were in the oil tray when I emptied it,I think they either fit at the bottom of the spring or the top under the plastic extension. Any ideas?

If you wana be a "cheapo" you could use ATF. Far as washers go, top and bottom of the spacer?
    Cheers :vtr2:

All of the fluid I see listed above is way too heavy. Do not use the SS grade stuff. The fluid I would suggest is either Honda Pro Oils 5w or Spectro 85/150. There are others that are ok too, but you will want to use cartrigde fluid in 5w.

    Good luck!
