Chris Ulrich had been riding the new GSXR1000R in Philips Island. I'm waiting to hear what he thinks.

    SEPANG TESTING - Vinales fastest

Sepang testing saw Maverick Vinales start putting in some consistent lap times, putting him fastest rider on day 1&2

    Results
    Vinales 1m 59.368s
    Ianone 1m 59.452
    Marquez 1m 59.506
    Dovizioso 1m 59.553
    Pedrosa 1m 59.578
    Rossi 1m 59.589

The Yamaha team are well pleased
"Yamaha Racing boss Lin Jarvis says that the addition of the youth of Maverick Viñales to the experience of Valentino Rossi for the 2017 and 2018 seasons mean that the squad have now assemble his ultimate dream team, as he sets out to replace the loss of Jorge Lorenzo after nine seasons and three world titles.

“This coming season has the potential to be very exciting. MotoGP is at a very high level, having six manufacturers present is exceptional, and I remember the years where we were struggling to fill the grid with mainly Honda and Yamaha keeping it afloat.

“From our own selfish perspective, we’ve got a really super team with Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales, became we have a living legend with an extraordinary career who’s been second the last two seasons and is super attractive for fans on one side of the garage, and the best possible hungriest young talent on the other side."

Honda are not having a good time, despite Marquez time the new big bang engine is not proving the solution HRC thought it was, with works and satellite teams swapping back and forth between the screamer and the big bang with general dismay and much head scratching, Marquez is unofficially saying the engine has all the problems it ever had, in some cases made worse

With engine seal up time not far away Honda are sweating

Guy martin to ride honda 297 six at castle combe

Recently signing for Honda Racing, the TT ace will ride the 297cc RC167 as part of the popular Classic parade to commemorate 60 years since the legendary Mike Hailwood® made his debut at the circuit back in 1957. Mike’s first Honda-mounted victory came at Castle Combe in 1961, setting a lap record in the process.

Adding to the unstinting support of the Hailwood family for the event, Honda UK’s Neil Tuxworth has added their corporate weight to the family-run track, whereby the Japanese factory has always enjoyed a special relationship with Castle Combe, and has been for a number of years their unique test venue prior to the Isle of Man TT Races.

Joining the ‘Honda Six’ on track will be a host of famous names on legendary machinery whereby the organisers have been granted special permission by Mike’s widow, Pauline, to run some of Hailwood’s iconic machinery at the track where the nine-times World Champion and 14-times TT winner rode in only his second ever meeting. On display and in action will be many actual race bikes ridden by ‘Mike the Bike’™ including the Ducati on which he made his sensational TT-winning comeback in 1978.

Neil Tuxworth, Honda UK Racing Manager: “We wanted to show our appreciation of Mike by supporting the Hailwood family at this unique event. Honda’s history with Mike goes back well over 50 years and for the last decade we have used the venue for our TT preparations. It’s great that we can support the circuit for this special commemoration of one of Honda’s most famous and respected riders by allowing Guy to ride the bike that took Mike to so much success over the years.”

Castle Combe is my local race circuit, I've thrashed many motorcycles round that bit of tarmac, even held the production lap record for a year on a Laverda Jota (what happened to them?)

I'm going with my youngest grandson, it'll be quieter than the TT although for Castle Combe it'll be manic

Drew .. My grandson took my copy of MCN to school to show his buddies the Guy Martin article, of I've never seen it since

Today MV topped the time sheets today (1:28.847) almost a half second faster than MM (.462). Crutchlow was right behind MM (.478).

Perhaps Stoner could help him figure out how to ride the Duc. Oh no that can't happen, they did not invite Stoner... didn't want to embarrass JL I guess. lol

MM93 is holding back .... I really like this new found 'consistency' he has been going for over getting the victory every time.

MM2 (More Mature Marc Marquez) I think he is more interested in improving the bike than making the fastest time. MV though has really taken to that Yamaha. I really think he'll be battling it out for the title this year, barring any injuries I think he has a good chance of taking the title this year.

Yup, last year Repsol Honda really screwed themselves with that engine - looks like they're making progress this year though.

And yes, MV will be a contender this year - but I think MM93 is going to take it again if he can stay consistent.

MM is maturing. The engine still needs a lot of work though. MV is going to be fun to watch.

    I was shooting with a Sony RX10 mk11 at 200mm.

I was very close to the first corner after the straight, so must have only been 30 feet from the bikes. I have done some cropping to get a bit closer in.

The Sony takes better video than pics, so I mainly use it for 4K video in S-Log2 on an electronic stabilized gimbal. No one is allowed to take any video of the bikes during a test, so I only used the Sony for pics. I have to say that I also own a Canon EOS 6d with the new 70-200mm and 16-35mm L lenses and the Sony makes the Canon look rubbish for stills. So much so that I'm now selling all my Canon gear and just using Sony from now on.

Here's one I got of Jack after he came out of the pit lane. He saw me then did a wheelie.

Nice photos Owned. Sony still cameras have come a long way. I'm looking at their tiny DSC RX 100IV for a pocket camera. I have several Canon 5DMK3's and a bunch of glass, they are very good and work horses.

Not a bad day for Honda yesterday, 4 bikes in the top 10. JL finally made it there too, and interesting to see Jonas Folger (P4) and Rins (P6) in there as well. Yes I know, it's only testing but good to see more the the status quo in the top 10. Looking like this years rookies are doing well, better than Tito Rabat at the moment. Not knocking Tito, just saying he hasn't done to well in the MotoGP class.

What made Tito so good in the Moto2 class was that he could pound out thousands of laps at the Almeria circuit on a machine very similar to what he raced....he can't do that on the same machinery for the MotoGP class.

After 3 days testing at Philip Island, Maverick Vinales is the fastest and most consistent rider, despite Marquez having a bit of a 'Rossi moment" with Vinales he just keeps on putting in solid and quick laps

Marquez did 270 laps to try and get Honda an engine sorted before they're sealed, despite being 2nd fastest he's still not happy with the power delivery, Crutchlow described the Honda as being fast in a straight line but so much rider effort is required to make the thing turn that it's self cancelling

Marquez was also disappointed that the new Honda was no more rider friendly than the 2016 bike

Lorenzo is up from 17th at Sepang to 7th at Phillip island, Vinales new team mate Rossi spent the time messing around with practising starts, bike swaps, etc that he ended up 12th fastest and is "not very happy"

Meanwhile Michael Dunlop has announced he's joining Suzuki for the TT with the strict understanding that "2nd and 3rd are of no interest", Michael is also going to race a big Suzuki stocker and possibly super sport

WSB is set to start this weekend, both Johny Rea and Chaz Davies sound happy with the bike and both are mentally ready for a hard season .... should be good

Just to remind you all what Michael Dunlop did last year, here's his fastest lap last year in the Senior TT

Yamaha used Rossi as a test mule at Phillips Island. All kinds of changes to the bikes, trying to conserve tires. In the end, he was tired himself, he he. I guess having all of his experience is a curse at times.

Race 1 was excellent, racing all the way, really showed up MotoGP

Race 2 should be the same

At the end of practice Jacobson was on pole ... Sofoglu out with a broken wrist will make the season even more interesting
