    Hello,

Has anyone else out there fitted the factory heated grips to their VFR1200?

I had mine fitted last week and whilst they work fine - although I reckon the heat settings are arse about with the hottest setting coming up first - I thought the installation looked a little dodgy (Aussie word for crap!). I attached some pics to illustrate.

The right grip is fairly neat and in keeping with the quality fit and finish for the rest of the bike but the left had one looks very after-market.

What I'd like to know (and view a picture if possible) is if all installs of the heated grips look like this?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    tuk,

hmmm...nowhere near as clean as the factory heated grips on my 6th gen...see attached photo of the left side grip.

my factory heated grips for my VFR1200 will be in next Tuesday. I'll check them out and let you know if the left side looks the same, electrical tape and all.

and FYI...my 6th gen heated grip controller is the same way...full heat when you turn them on and it drops down from there as you push the controller button.

forgot to mention...I did the install on my 6th gen and I'll do it on the 1200 as well, but I'll check the grips out of the box along with install directions and see if that is likely what my install will look like...I suffer from a bit of perfectionism.

    tuk,

Sorry to take so long to get back. I just got the grip kit yesterday evening. I am attaching several pictures for you of the parts out of the kit and also from the install instructions. A few observations right out of the box:

    1. The grips are made in China...for the price...they should be made somewhere other than China.
    2. The design of the wiring on the left grip is nowhere near as good as the grips on the 6th gen...why they put the three connectors right at the grip is a mystery to me. As a result it will be difficult to make the install look "clean" like factory.
    3. The two black tubes in the pic are supposed to cover the electrical connectors (left and right side) and per the install instructions there should only be electrical tape right at the top of the tube where it meets the rubber sheathing on the wires coming out of the left grip. I can't tell from your pics if the installer used the tube or just electrical taped everything once connected.
    4. The hidden controller is certainly nice, but the controller on the 6th gen will be easier to quickly tell what the heat setting is than on the 7th gen...I think.
    5. The 7th gen heated grips are pretty much the same diameter as the non heated grips whereas on the 6th gen the the heated grips are quite a bit bigger in diameter...I preferred the larger grips.

I'm going to try and use heat shrink tubing in place of the supplied tubes and minimize or eliminate the use of electrical tape if possible on my install.

Once I get the install done I'll post some pics.

    Hope this helps.

    DZ

Thanks mate and thanks for taking so much trouble to reply.

I can now see why the install on the left grip is a little bit messier than the right. I think my installer did use the tubing but electrical-taped up and over it in an attempt to seal the area.

I'll look forward to your completed pics.

    Cheers,

    One has to ask TUK,

Why would you need heated grips in Coff's anyway?, the weather up there is beautiful most of the time..I don't even need 'em here in Sydney.

    Cheers,
    Smithy.

Haha. Yea, fair call Smithy but if you head up over the mountains from here in winter, it does get a little chilly. But I suppose compared to our friends in parts of the US, it's summer here all the time!

Hi Folks, is it worth getting the Honda heated grips $730 over the Oxford grips $130. Are they better ?. Currently I can get the grips and factory hugger sent to my door for $530 from the US.

    Regards Bad VFR

    Hi mate,

I can't comment on the Oxford grips as I haven't seen them but apart from the installation issues mentioned above, I'm pretty happy with the Honda grips. They work well and are easy to use and nicely integrated, without the need for a separate switch or changing the grip design.

Maybe someone else can comment on the Oxford ones.

    Cheers,

DZ, where did you purchase your kit? I found These on eBay.uk. I'm concerned because it shows a heat controller. Not sure if thats the correct kit. Also trying to install Crossrunner (Gen 7) heated grips on my 2007 VFR800 (Gen 6).

They actually are the best price for all original Honda parts, that I found anyways. Bought my saddles there for $1500, including the top case. So there prices are amazing. Dealer was selling for $3000. Ya right. Screw me from behind once your at it. lol.

Great walk-thru for a successful install. Can anyone tell me the location as to where the accessory harness is to be connected? Is it under the seat by the fuse box or up front near the ECU? I've already got the airbox out for new plugs, etc and my ECU going to Guhl...plus my front end is torn apart to do a proper LED Install which was aslo a very successful completion...just have to button everything up...so I thought I'd take pause if the accessory harness plug is up front... Any instructions you may be able to download or photos would be most helpful. Thank-you,
    -B
