    I found this years project.

Crashed 1998 VFR800. Previous owner took a bad one at High Plains Raceway. He salvaged some suspension parts and then needed my services to dispose of the rest.

    Options for the project include:

    1) take electrical and fuel parts off it and do some machining to adapt FI to my 3rd gen bike.

    2) Fit the whole '98 800 power plant into the 3rd gen

    3) Street fighter (this will be hubby's vote) by finding a new front end and building a new sub frame.

    4) Build my own VFR800 Crossrunner so I can return the DR650 to single track form.

well when I first set out to get my hands on the project, the plan was to attempt the FI conversion on the 3rd gen - just 'cuz.

But when the bike came with a title and the headstock seems to be ok, the other possibilities started coming to mind.

Street fighter would be the easiest and require the least effort. Scrounge parts, put it back together, make it ugly.

The crossrunner idea might require the most funds but I have been drooling hard on the F800GS because I spend far more time exploring dirty mountain passes than paved twisties. Finding enough travel in the rear swingarm, light wheels, tail, seat, custom plastics, good suspension, tank, luggage blah blah blah....

The FI conversion to 3rd gen would yield the most mental stimulation and problem solving while requiring the least amount of $$.

    Streetfighter......

Make it the most debauched piece of ironmongery imaginable

People looking at it should cringe and turn away, small children run from it

Magic 8 balls are for entertainment, not really for serious decision making. I didn't vote, "use as big paperweight" wasn't offered as a choice.

NCB, I thought you of all people would appreciate some real discussion around here rather than the same old; tires, oil, brakes, gut-the-can, PAIR valve, RR cooling fan, blah blah blah....

Combination of 3 and 4, find some trick MX front suspension and make a supermoto/motard (never sure what you actually call them)

interesting idea Bryan. Kicked that around a bit but I'm not sure how well that would really work. The idea of the supermoto bikes is that they are stupid light and easy to throw around in the corners. This bike will never be super light since the engine alone weighs nearly as much as a typical supermoto. Then there's the weight of the SSSA to boot. In the end, I wonder if it would just turn out to be a street fighter with shitty forks?

Thanks for offering more than NCB did though :tongue2:

Ditto on that! I always liked the BMW GS bikes. Off road-fire road machines with all the power you want. Plus highway capable with some comfort. Go for it!

Agree with you on the weight issue tinkerinWstuff, might only be good for tar or mild gravel really (kinda like the crossrunner :->). Steering head angle could also be different?

The Tiger and the F800 are just as limited. I have wondered about the head angle as well. Early stages of research.

well, you could ditch all but the engine and electrics. maybe you could source a trellis type frame and go all multistrada on it. it could get really pricey, though. I have a spare engine myself from my 98.

I'm doubting my budget would allow me to duplicate the sexy and performance of a multistrada. Or the Aprillia for that matter.

One of the biggest issues I see so far with attempting an ADV bike -
mounting and centering a narrower wheel/tire combination on the SSSA

If you wind up street fighter-ing it, or doing something that doesn't require the stock vfr headlight, would you mind if I take it off your hands? I've got a project in mind and I dont want to risk my only headlight assembly.

    Let me know you price!
