I have a 2009 VFR and I am not sure what to expect when the VTEC engages. I think it is not working. I understand that the coolant temp has to be above 170 degress and the RPM has to be above 6800. With this being said what should I experience if it is engaging? Thanks in advance.

I know right away when it engages. Rate of acceleration increases, engine makes a different sound. It's kinda like a kick in the arss. I have a 2007 800.

Coolant temp has to be somewhere around 150 before it will engage. Mine does it at 148-150. Others report slightly higher. A gentle roll on will yield little difference other than the increased sound. If you are under moderate to heavy acceleration you will notice a significant surge in power and acceleration at 6800-7000 RPM as VTEC engages. This is due to the instantaneous increase in HP that is given, around 10-15 HP.

It depends on how you are accelerating. You should feel it kick in. How it kicks in varies from bike to bike. from a slight noticeable change to a shove to feeling like an 80's turbo. If you are unsure, find a straight and evenly apply the throttle whille creepinf in RPMs. You dont have to be in 6th. Keep it even as it passes 6800 through 7000 and see if you see a change. If not. See a Doctor.

It's electro mechanical. There is a selonoid but the system is also actuated by oil pressure.

You can also go by sound. I've got an '07 and the exhaust note is very distinctive when it kicks in.

Mine's a 2004. It kicks in 6700-6800rpm, and you can tell: the exhaust note deepens and there's a real surge of power. First time I found out what this thing can really do was coming down an on-ramp, hit about 7200 in first, upped to 2nd and punched it and the handling got squirrelly for a couple of seconds; realized "Oh, so THAT'S what it feels like when the front wheel leaves the road!"

That could be tricky. The ECU sends a signal to the vtec spooling valve once parameters are met, eg RPM, engine temp, etc, so the possibilities are faulty spooling valve, faulty ECT sensor, faulty ECU.
Check the ECU for fault codes first if you are sure the engine is coming up to temperature.

I'm ignorant, but i will take a wack at it = did you buy the bike used? Is it possible to disable the VTEC somehow???
Would some kind of power commander thing be able to even out the boost drastically enough to not be able to notice it? I am taking some wild guesses at anything here......
But yeah, Like the others have said, i don't know how you would "not" feel it, if it was working.! :)
