So I'm in my man cave the other night, contemplating what to do while I wait for the next batch of parts. Then I see the 929 shock that came with the bike sitting in a box and think, what the hell, I'll put it in. But I'm out of beer so for just a moment I hesitate. Then, with regained courage, I dive in with both feet. After taking all the stock stuff off including the remote preload adjuster, I lay the two shocks side by side on the bench and see that the 929 shock is almost an inch shorter. Well I have no interest in creating a low rider so after greasing the needle bearings on the shock linkage, I reinstalled the stock shock.

I know that a number of members have installed the 929 shock on their VFRs so I ask them, what did you do to obtain a stock ride height with the 929 short shock? I thought abount installing a spacer but the upper attach fitting isn't long enough to accomodate a spacer that thick. Edificate me please oh wise ones!

    Ahhh I see,
He doesn't describe it but it appears that he machines the top of the shock to accept an extended section to achieve the appropriate center to center distance. Nice!

Look at my 5th gen thread linked in my signature and you will find a simple to machine spacer .

I went higher than OEM ride height. Basically set the bike on center stand with 1/4"plywood under the rear wheel. Then measured length for spacer, machine to fit. Am very pleased with it.

was putzing around in the garage today and found my mock-up top mount.

I never rode with this mount, just used to get my geometry where I wanted it. Adding and subtracting washers to get the length. Then I took the mock-up and a caliper up to the bridgeport to get my measurements and make the aluminum one you saw above.

I could send it to you if you like

Thanks but I decided that I really like the remote preload adjust and so I will give the stocker a try to see how it rides first.

Measure that up again and post it in this thread Tink. It could be helpful to us shop monkeys who might want to tinker on our own.
