Well, I was planning to go for a ride today and I noticed my oil pressure light was on. I just recently did the oil change on Saturday, Amsoil 10-40W. The bike is a 2006 with a little over 26000 miles on it.

I use it to ride to work daily and it didnt give me any problems on Mon or Tues. When it is in any gear idling, 1000 rpm, the light stays on. As soon as I give it a little gas and the rpm's go up a little, the light turns off. While riding it the light will only come on when I am idling but it will turn off as soon as I get going.

What could be the problem? Thanks

That is pretty serious. You need to stick a manual gauge on it and check what is really going on. Hopefully just a defective switch but you need to see what the pressure really is before riding.

Oil pressure problems aren't common so keep your chin up. But as TC said, check it out and find out for sure.

Dumb question - but I'll ask it. You put enough oil in when you changed it, right? Checked the viewing window while up on the center stand on a level surface?

Just did an oil change and you never saw the light on at idle before ??

Not enough oil, or maybe a 20W50 would be better for your hot climate.

Oil level is good, just a little over 3 quarts. Level on the window is right at the top level mark after sitting for a while on the center stand. As for temps out here in SoCal, it hasn't been really hot. It's been good riding weather, 85-90 degrees.

What oil filter did you use? Could be restrictive or bad.

I didn't think of a bad or restrictive filter, but what if its a whole new brand, and possibly a little longer? Could that matter as well?

I used an Amsoil filter. So far this F#$@ sucks! I never had any issues with my 96 VFR750, RIP. i have had to take my truck to work these last two days, $80 in gas. I have looked through various sites and it seems that this problem is an issue with many orher bikes. People have fixed it with a simple filter change and others having issues with bearings. i was going to check the oil pressure but know I cant even find the oil gauge joint attachment and the shop wants to charge me $80 an hour to diagnose and fix. i went ahead and changed the oil filter today to see if it changed anything but no luck:frown:

Well........the oil pressure switch is located in the valley on the right side, should be able to fish it oot with just pulling the right lower and a beer or two. Spec is 71 psi at 6000 rpm but would think 30 ish psi at idle would be in the ball park when warm and the switch is an 8 psi switch so the presssure is really low if the switch is good. Can send you a gauge set up if you wish to test yourself, could get it oot Monday and you could test by Wednesday ish.......if you want. Seen several failed switch's and a plugged filter once.......no need to go into panic mode but you need to verify what the failure is.

Thanks TOE, but I could pick up a gauge at an autoparts store for about $30 I think. The only problem I had was finding the adapter for the oil filter. I might have misunderstood but can I check the pressure using the area in which the pressure switch connects?

At what rpm does the oil light blink off ?? Proppa idle speed setting for your bike is close to 1200-1300 rpm.

At 1000 rpm it stays on, 1200-1300 rpm it flickers on and off, 1500 rpm it goes off. This is my third oil change on the bike since I bought it with 12k miles. The guy before me was running Rotella
