I am thinking about going to go pick up a very clean 96 vfr750 tomorrow. It runs great and looks mint but the owner told me it "occasionally" doesnt go into second gear when not pulled hard enough. I was wondering if it is common on these bikes and its his shifting or if the gears are just slowly starting to fail. Thanks

I have a 1990 with almost 67k miles on it and it snicks into all the gears nice and smooth. If it's having issues with just one gear, then it sounds like the shifting fork may be on the way out. Hope this helps.

If you get the bike for a great price just skip second.

Thanks for getting back to me and yea that would make sense. He said once its in gear it doesnt slip or grind so I guess it must just be the fork. Just a shame the thing only has 18xxx miles and looks brand new. Might still go take it for a ride and see how it feels.

These gear boxes are a modified dawg-box. The gears are in constant mesh and we move a selector dawg into position. It is very simple but sometimes the linkage has too much slop or is not set right or has been damaged due to abuse. This can make it hard to shift unless you shift to the next gear by lifting/pushing hard. But if its linkage then its all gears. My vote is that the clutch needs some tlc and there is nothing wrong because a clutch that doesnt disengage will make shifting hard, most notably between first and second due to having to pass neutral. Test it out and see, then let us know.

Thanks for the input. Hopefully when i take the bike out it acts fine, after reading about how great these vfr's are I really want one. Plus i love the styling of the 4th gen overall and the sound of those gear driven cams!

If it doesnt shift well, tighten the clutch linkage, I dont know if the 4th gen is a cable or hydraulic like my 6th gen but most miss shifts happen because the clutch is dragging too much. Between 1st and 2nd is a lot of room vs 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 5th etc.

If you get it keep us posted. We have some 4th gen doctors that can give specific help and maybe hook you up with a 4th gen surgeon.

My 5th gen requires a pretty positive click with the boot.

Ended up picking the bike up today and it had no problems grabbing second, so the owner was honest after all. Even though it was 17 degrees in pa today the bike started right up and ran terrific, love the feel of the vfr compared to my old 94 gsxr 750. Very happy with my purchase

I have the same bike, same year, and last year with 50k on the clock I had the same problem. I hoped it was the clutch discs, replaced them, no change. Ended up being a bent shift fork (the 2nd bike I own that has had this happen to it.) Solution was about $1800 for parts/labor @ the dealership. Easy fix.

Its a lot of work to replace shift forks. The whole thing comes apart and its like a jigsaw puzzle to put back together.

Yeah. I could have done it myself. I have a full moto working garage, and plenty of light/tools/space to do it, and other stuff to ride while it was down. But it was still easier for me time-wise to just write a check and have someone else warranty it. Runs good now...I bet I haven't put 1k on it since the fix.

Sounds about the same. When it comes down to it, id rather have someone else on the hook rather than my wallet.

There she is. Cant wait till it gets warm enough to ride! And as for the oil it wasnt done for the past few months so that could be a factor to it. Plan on changing it tomorrow so hopefully its just something small like that.
