I haven't seen much discussion about BT headsets here or Sena for that matter - however found a few posts with folks around here having using them..

The new Firmware was recently released for the SMH10 only - for now,,, just wondering if anyone upgrade and thoughts - connecting to other brands etc. ??

    Cheers

Im looking at the smh10r and the sr10 adapter. Read lots of reviews, still looking. Its supposed to connect to other systems but none of the reviews I have read even tried to do that.

If anyone knows more please share!

Cheers for that, don't ride with anyone with another unit but would be good to see if wind noise from other riders while reasonable is better subdued, else the phone can be flaky at times via Sumo so would be interesting if that also is improved.

No sweat, curious to hear reviews - as there is very little comments out there after the update even if only a month

Other than the Universal Intercom, the talk back (sidetone - you hear yourself through the speakers) intercom/phone function seems really weird - but apparently makes a difference... I'm sure reviews are being written...

Change made from version 4.3 to 5.0

    Universal IntercomTM
    Advanced Noise ControlTM
    Sidetone
Ultra HD Voice RecordingTM for PRISM and Bluetooth Audio Pack
Minor bug fixes in intercom volume

I did the update on all 3 units last week. Funny thing is, just recently I realized the unit didn't have sidetone, and I wasn't sure if my passenger could hear me... until they answered me.
So when I did the firmware update, I turned on sidetone... it's set off as default with the firmware upgrade. I think I like the sidetone on, but time will tell.

My GF immediately noticed that she could hear my phone music, another new feature. I usually put the helmet on and then briefly turn on music to make sure things are working and I can hear the phone.
I didn't notice any difference in noise reduction... in fact, I recall turning off the intercom 2 or 3 times because of wind noise.

The SENA device manager is still a PIA. I had great difficulty in getting each unit to be recognized by the device manager, even when my windows PC device manager could see it.
I emailed Sena, and they sent me some long-winded arcane method of plugging it in, turning it on, turning it back off, turning it back on... [IMG]

I finally figured out MY problem was that I turned on each unit, but didn't hold the power button quite long enough.
The instructions say hold the button until it flashes lavender, which takes a moment longer than just turning it on. Once I realized that, the 3rd unit upgrade went fine.

I sure wish they'd make an Android app to let me configure the unit. It's already connected via BT, so it's a no brainer to be able to change the configuration with your phone.

Just a foot note to what VFR_AG has posted here, he and I bought a set of two. We finally paired them up yesterday and tried them out at his place while he was working on my bike and I was learning. The sound is much better than the 4 year old Chatterbox that I already have and get frustrated with. We tested the distance and in miserable weather and near by power lines and heavy traffic, we got quite good intercomes at a distance of about 1/2 mile. Crackling a bit but readable. I think his neighbours probably thought he lost it looking at him standing out on the road wearing his helmet though.

He phoned me while I was hot footing it down the freeway at a speed I will not publicly post. I could hear him failry well and he advised that there was no wind noise comeing across from my mic. The mic is sensitive though so don't place it too close to your mouth.

One pain in the ass though is the charging of these units. If you are plugged into a computer to charge it up, and you computer goes to sleep, then it stops charging. Easily overcome, but you need to be aware of that.

I ran into one issue today that I can't figure out. The wole damned thing up and stopped working for me when I was fumbling around with the buttons. It would not even shut down. Blinking blue light (indicating "on") would not even go out. Even when I unplugged the battery source and plugged it back in, the blue light came back on. I have re-charged the unit tonight and the light went out. Tomorrow I will play with it again and see what happens then.

We got the SMH10R which is about the size of a match book. Fits in the helmet superb. I am having an issue with mine though and I am sure Sena will help me out or replace.

Perhaps Iphone or Ipod would help :pound:
I like the 10R but I am hardly listen to music so the regular 10 will be good.

$269 isn't a sale price. I bought mine for $252 and had located them for as low as $228 after much searching. Right now Amazon has them for $269.
You can also go on Amazon and buy just the control unit for $106, and then the speaker pack for around $30 or so, and have a working unit without the fancy box sitting in the top of my closet.
The new firmware update comes with a new operator manual anyway, downloaded from Sena.

I got a chance to test my SMH-10 unit with another BT brand. It was interesting.
My sis had picked up a BT headset at cycle gear for $79, ("Was $159" according to Cycle Gear, which is odd since it's a new product AFAIK).

First, you have to pair it differently.
To pair with another SENA unit, put the other brand unit into the pairing mode. Then you hold the SENA jog dial in for 5 seconds or so until she says INTERCOM PAIRING.
Continue holding it another 1-2 seconds and she'll say UNIVERSAL INTERCOM PAIRING. Then hit the pair button on the other unit. So after a few false starts, we got it.
We rode and I could hear her pretty well, but she couldn't hear me over 30-40 feet or so away. We talked fine while next to each other, but past 50-70 feet apart, we both lost it.

After a short day trip, she decided she's going to return that one to cycle gear and get a sena. She felt that mine was much easier to use than hers.
Translated, that means I had read the instruction manual, and she hadn't, so she didn't know how to use hers and couldn't figure it out while riding.

Other notes. Of course, the SENA has voice prompts where hers just beeped. I called her twice while I was broken down beside the road (fuel petcock vacuum line came loose) and she said there were momentary interruptions of her music, but no real way to tell she was getting a call.

Her unit mounted up okay, with similar speakers. Two mic options, a mic on a wire or one on a boom for open helmets or shorty helmets.
It also comes with sticky pads for other mounting options, but we didn't use them.
It bolts on, similar to the sena, and then the control unit slides down into the mount.

Connections consist of two ports on the bottom, both look like earbud speaker connections. You can see them in the picture above.
One is for charging, the other for the speaker/mic combo cord. This means no firmware upgrades, since there's no USB data port.
Both ports had little rubber dust boots, and we had minor difficulty getting the charging port dust boot to stay snapped closed.
It finally did, but took several attempts. I'm not confident that it would still stay closed after a few months of use.

Thanks FTL - with sena's advantages it looks like it's only limited the other unit - but as long as it works.... That may incentivize all others to upgrade ;)

Also another item to note is that it will only sync to one unit period if it's non sena brand... At least it has the functionality

How are you finding the voice back on calls and intercom ?

I have an SMH10, and I've been using all of the latest updates including Betas for it whenever they're available. The wind noise from what I've been told is and has been negligible from several versions ago. I'll be doing 80 down the freeway and talking with someone on the phone, and they have no idea I'm even in a moving vehicle, much less on a bike ploughing headlong into the wind with my screaming cams and blaring TBR exhaust. I'm also using a chin skirt for my helmet, so that may help too.

From what I understand the universal pairing basically sets the Sena to pretend that it's a phone that you can pair other devices to, so any other device that supports the handsfree calling profile and can be paired with a phone, should be able to be paired with the Sena as if it were a phone. You may run into issues if the devices requires a specific pairing code other than the most common 0000. Of course feature limitations of the handsfree profile apply for both devices.

I've noticed that the volume boost I've gotten since I think around v4.5 beta or so introduces some clipping if you turn it up to 11, so I usually turn it down a couple clicks from the max to reduce the likelihood of speaker damage, thereby negating the volume gain you get with the update.
