every so often when i go to start the bike i hit the button it starts to crank then just locks up if i rock it or bang on the side by the starter some times it will work other times if i keep hitting the button it will finally crank again
most of the time it cranks and starts right up
1992 vfr750 91,000 miles on original engine and rectifier as far as i can tell

What do you measure as the battery voltage at rest, with the key on, and when pressing the starter button?

Yep.. Sounds like you're not getting enough power to the starter to crank it over under compression. This could be that your battery doesn't have enough juice to crank it over or that you've got a loose wire somewhere, namely a battery terminal. Check the voltage like kenny suggests. If it is low, charge it up and have it tested. If it tests good, it is time to look for loose connections and maybe charging issues.

you need to re-build your starter motor, its easy and worth it. I used to have a "hot start" issue and thats what it was. Now the bike sounds like the ones that come off the showroom floor with a whirl to life, sorry, can't put a sound clip in

91,000 is an accomplishment, my 91 has almost 80,000 but I won't bore you with the parts/time/labour/money that went into it. I love it, what can I say. I am a shallow bastard. :loco:

Your battery is no good. The extreme voltage sag under load is the clue. A trickle charger cannot charge a battery, only float it once it is already full. There is likely no problem with the starter, but you will never know while using a clapped-out battery.

Do we know how many miles are on the "sed-bike?" Batteries are often over looked as other people said, they are very mysterious, much like "Mushi" is. Thats German for poosey btw :stripper7: :pound: :loco:

I feel I can do this: "I told you so." You know the honda parts catalog makes you buy the parts to the starter sprag clutch seprately. So, you need the body, three springs, three caps, three of these weighted cap things (which I don't know the name of.) Anyway, if it were a Kawasaki, you could get the entire kit for one price instead of having to be an accountant.

oh, and dont forget the clutch gasket if you do the starter sprag. Keep track of them fibre washers on your starter motor as they have a sequence too :mech:
