I am curious if I can get a 180 rear wheel without losing my single side swing arm?

    Hey rallen0223

First off Welcome to the WORLD!!! As a picture is worth a 1000 words, don't forget to post a photo of your bike so we can all bask in its glory. LOL

As you have posted your question in the 3rd and 4th gen forum my guess would be that you have a 4th gen VFR (1994-1997 VFR750). If this is correct then YES, you can put a 180/55 R17 on the rear but unfortunately not on the 4th gen rim as the tire is a bit too wide for the rim as the 4th gens came with a 5" wide rear rim.

IF you happen to be lucky enough to come across one, as they are highly sought after and usually not cheap, the 3rd gen 8 spoke rim (91-93 VFR750) rear wheel will fit any gen VFR from 1991-1997 VFR750 and the 1998-2008 VFR800 as well with no modification. The third gen wheel, as with the 5th and 6th gen were 5.5 inch rims and are designed to fit the 180/55 R17 rear tire.

Once again, welcome to the site and may you find all the answers you seek. Have fun, ride safe, and keep her shiny side up. I'm sure you will come to love the VFR as much as the rest of us. Not that we are at all partial, NOOOOO, not at all.

If you have a 90-93, it has a 5.5" rear wheel, you can run a 180. 94-97 is only a 5" wheel and 170 is the recommended max.

Does anyone know of any after market wheels I can put on that would be that wide and still not cost me my single side swing arm?

I'm sure with some goggle searching you should be able to find something, but I am not aware of any that would be easily found. That being said, not all VFR wheels are equal. The older model wheels can fit on newer model bikes i.e. 3rd Gen wheel on a 6 Gen bike. The counter to that does not always work i.e. 6 Gen wheel on 3rd Gen bike. The reason is the rear hubs are different. The older model hubs have nut/bolts that stick out from the hub a little, where the newer model hubs do not. The older wheels, 8 spoke for instance has notches on the hub mating side of the wheel that allow these nut/bolts to fit into. So even if you find a 5.5" wheel with the correct 4 hole bolt pattern, be aware of what your bike's hub looks like.
