On my '96, the pinch bolt won't hold the chain adjustment. Last time I torqued it to specs...still slipped back after 200 miles. Seems to run good on a too loose chain though. Any ideas? I'm at 56K and have a gold chain on that just wont wear out.

I'm wondering why you would say that. The Honda mechanic says the chain and sprockets are good for another 10-15 K. I've had the bike 10 years and put 50K+ on it, so I'm no novice. That chain does not go from just right to loose in 10 miles from wear. Why would the pinch bolt loose its pinch?

Can you make a mark on the adjuster to definitely identify the pinch bolt as the culprit? That way if the adjuster slips, you can easily see it. Or have you already checked that? How many miles are on the chain?

It's possible that the pinch bolt has worn down the area around the head of the bolt, and not tightening up like it should.

I guess it's the bearing holder that slips, not the pinch bolt that comes loose? Is your rear wheel bearing ok? On my 5th gen the torque for the pinch bolt is 74 Nm (54 lbf-ft).

I had this problem once, same symptoms. turned out to be the chain. Not to say that the pinch bolt can't slip but it sounds like you have a lot of miles on your chain/sprockets, might be worth changing them.

Thanks all. I'll try making some marks on the adjuster, and then maybe a new gold chain.

I think that is a bit of a quantum leap there pal. Maybe so, but until OP proves this is the case, I will consider any of the suggestions to have some validity. That's what we do here. Seek varied opinions for a problem and find the correct solution.
