Bolt check

    I was cleaning my chain today and was doing the chassis lube when I noticed the shifter was loose. The bolt only took a turn and a half, but I'm glad I found it before I lost the shifter.

    When was the last time you checked yours?

    Just a friendly reminder.

    Always good to check stuff, but the shift lever can't come off the shaft unless the bolt is removed--it can't just slide off due to looseness of the pinch.

    Nope, it can't come off unless the bolt completely falls out. But if it's loose it will constantly vibrate/buzz and wear away at the splines on the shifter rod. Not a good thing when the splines go away. All you can do then is hope that it's the splines on the lever and not the shaft.

    Just checked mine and it was loose. Put a little locktite on it & snugged her up. Checked every other bolt I could find and all were tight. Thanks for the reminder!

    Mine's fine. But be damned if I did not discover I am missing the top Sprocket Cover Bolt.

    What pisses me off more, I am going on a four day ride next weekend, this is a long weekend here so nothing is open Monday anyway, and because of that, the bike shops will be closed Tuesday in lieu of Monday Holiday, and I am leaving about 06:30 Friday morning.

    If anyone has the specs on that bolt or can tell me it is the same as the other bolts on that cover, then I can likely get the proper one elsewhere. I suspect it is the same dimensions and length, but don't know for sure.

    that's why changing the oil is all ways a good idea even a bit early-you never know what screwy thing is going wrong without looking around under the fairing-left one is the easy one-I did find a few thing to tighten up too. I use blue Loctite on everything-I can.

    Use a small screwdriver/probe to find the length of bolt to the case threads. With that measurement head to the nearest hardware store and pick up a generic metric hex head bolt to get you by. You will probably need to take one of the others out for the proper thread size and pitch. That should get you by until you can get it replaced properly.

    Hey Randy

    Check out the following parts fiche from Partzilla. Is the bolt that is missing on your bike part #23 in the diagram. If so it should be a 90mm long flange head bolt. If it is missing then perhaps it was not tightened enough when you did the last sprocket change. Or maybe when you did the stator swap on your last EPIC journey, though not sure if the sprocket cover needs to be removed for that procedure.

    Just be sure to get the proper thread on the bolt. If you are heading this way I can check with the Honda dealer here on Tuesday as I believe they are open.

    Hey Karazy

    Thanks for the tip. Was out in the garage today and checked the clutch on my bike and bolt was fine. Hmmmmm, I thought to myself, maybe I should check the wife's bike. Guess what. Apparently the previous owner must have stripped the threads on the shifter from tightening it too much, or maybe cross threaded them. The bolt was just sitting in there, held by gravity. When I turned it by hand it never tightened at all, so I got the socket driver and nothin'. Pulled the bolt out and all the threads are SHOT. I tried threading in the one from the shifter on my bike and that didn't work. On quick examination after removing the shifter arm, the threads appear to be marred on the inside so I guess I'll be ordering a new shifter arm. The wife's bike is not insured yet as she didn't want to get the insurance done up until she had taken the motorcycle course prior to getting her license. THANK GOD FOR YOUR THREAD!!!!!

    Zoom-Zoom, you could just put a lock nut on the end of a longer bolt through the shift lever. That's the way they used to do a lot of bikes, just as a back-up. Thread through the shifter and then a nut on the end.

    I'm going to have to take a photograph in with me or have them look at the bike. I can't make out where in that blow up where that #23 is supposed to go. Matter of fact, there appears to be two missing. Top and bottom. Maybe in the morning I will post up a picture to show what I mean.

    This is what I am faced with:

    Are these two the bolts that I need? I can't quite figure out by that exploded view, exactly where those bolts are supposed to go. I now see that it appears both the upper and lower bolts are missing. I can't see why, when I broke down in Regina this year, that they would have removed this at all. The stator is on the other side of the bike. More likely that I maybe did not properly tighten them down when I did the last chain and sprocket change. Or possibly someone stole them, but I don't see where or when that could have happened honestly.
