I smelled sulfur. I didn't know it was me. Running south on the 270 there was an POP and I lost power. I made it to a safe spot and AAA got me home in Arlington, VA. I assume it's the reg/rec and it fried my battery. I'll be checking it out today. I'll search the forum 'preferred' replacement. I know I should by two. One for replacement. One to carry.
Is anyone running a Shorai battery? My VFR is a 1997. The pic is from waiting last night. AAA thing worked great.

Check out roadstercycle.com and the Shindengen MosFet R/Rs, he has complete kits to upgrade wiring too. If your bike has a Catalytic Converter, the sulfur smell was from gas in the cat, my Envoy SUV did the same thing when I lost one of the plug coils.

Sulfer smell could also be from an overcharged battery from a faulty regulator. But it's all assumptions at this point until OP performs some test.

If there was an audible POP, I would be kinda wary about a dead short somewhere, or like a few have suggested, the battery ate it big time. Dig thru the harness, look at fuses for nastyness.

Then of course, do the drill for a total debug.

    Thanks for the links!
The 10 A fuse in the "Ignition" slot in the fuse box was blown. I pulled the battery and went straight to my dealer, Coleman Powersports in Falls Church, VA. I didn't want to start charging a questionable battery. Danny used their tester, got 10 volts off it and verified it destroyed. I got a fresh battery. Installed it. Replaced the fuse. Turned on the key. I had lights - nuetral, oil and one more on the dashboard. I'm ready to do the 5000 rpm voltage check. I applied a touch of choke. It started right up. I took off the choke and the motor died. No start. Turned the key off, then on. No cranking. I checked the fuse = blown.
I'll go at it tomorrow. What is blowing that fuse is the question.

Check all the stator connectors to see if any signs of burning, something in the charging circuit fried your battery. I would un plug the rec/reg, replace the fuse and see if it blows again when you run it, if not you know what the culprit is, rec/reg or stator

I've used Coleman Powersports on 2 occasions for a boat & will NEVER go back to them again. They charged me for things that were flat out NOT DONE.

If you need any help, let me know; I'm down in Spotsylvania.

I can't get the fuel tank off the '97. I removed the back bolt, disconnected the fuel line and the gauge wire. It just won't move. If I get it off I want to check wiring.
I disconnected my Battery Tender leads off the battery, in case that's my problem. I put in a fresh fuse and turned the key on. The fuse blew, no crank what so ever. On the left hand controls the left turn signal works. The right doesn't.
Eventually this chaos and frustration might be clear when the problem is cleared up.

I got the tank removed today. I had tried using levers backed by wooden wedges. I decided to remove the left and right fairings for visibility. Then it felt loose and it came off the usual way.
Heard the suggestion to look at the wiring diagram at three things. Battery, fuse box, ignition switch. The fuse blows if I just turn on the key. I might have to get to the main ignition switch.

Ignition switch is just turning on the power, short causing the fuse to blow could be anywhere in the harness that becomes live once you turn the power on, only by a process of elimination will you find it, just have a stack of fuses handy, because you are going to need them. You will have to start unplugging connectors to determine the area the short is then work from there

Pull the reg/rect off and check to see if it has melted on the underside.

thx - There's no visible damage to the rr or the wiring. I did take it off.
I checked the circuit between the black wire on the RH kill switch and the fuse for ignition, fuel pump and starter. My multimeter/ohm meter said zero resistance. The RH pod wiring bundle and the main - key - switch bundle join together and go into the instrument area under the fairing.
Most of my bulbs are blown out.
Looks like I need to check the connectors between those two bundles of wires in the front.
I went to an auto store and bought a box of 10 amp fuses!

I got the front fairing off.
Since I'm not so experienced with electric problems I think one of my local shops will have to take over now.
I feel I'm doing what I can by rote, not much practical experience. If I keep fiddling around in there, I don't think I can accomplish much. I appreciate the help here. I wish it was just a bad rectifier. Maybe that is the problem?!
    Cheers,
    Bill

I got word from the shop. I need an ignition control module ($850) and a RR ($256), OEM prices. I'm planning on taking the bike back and doing the work myself. I'll get a RR from Roadstercycle, $135. Any one have a ignition control mod. for a '97, or a better price than $850?

Ebay is your friend here. I would not spend much on an ECU until the charging system was sorted.

I got my Reg/Rec kit from RoadsterCycle. Jack ships fast! I see my three Yellows. The Green and the Red/White are grounds. I figure I can attach the three Yellows to the RR plug in. What do I do with the Gr and the RW? The fused leads are supposed to go to my battery as pictured.
