I always thought of the Interceptor being like Chuck Yeagar's F104 Starfighter, not Sargent Joe Friday in a Ford Fairlane.

The 104 that Yeager augered in was not, a line 104. The bird was a highly modified version stripped of gun mounts, armor ect., to reduce weight. Modifications included a rocket motor not for boost but for flight control in what were called "Zoom Flights" by the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School, formerly the USAF Test Pilot School.

Cabin pressure mods were also made to compensate for full pressure suit garments.

At that same time, Neil Armstong and others were flying the X-15.

The basics of the Zoom Flights. Was takeoff and nearly straight up in full mil AB until engine starvation at then classified altitudes exceeding 100,000 feet. The aircraft then tumbled until there was sufficient density to air start the engine.

We are talking some dudes with both high IQ's, thousands of hours and cojones grandes..

Yeager was not checked out in that bird..

Then Bird Colonel Yeager was Commandant of the USAF APRS..

What a crock, just another reason why, personally don't care for the Interceptor labeling. and to think one guy had it to mimic a cops car engine Pfff.. please. VFR makes more sense. I get the interceptor name as in the meaning in what the word means in general http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interceptor but to have it because a Crown Vic had an engine that was labeled as such. at least the Aircraft version had some strength behind it. Sheesssh!

Then you see the name of the CBR1100XX Super BlackBird. Named after the Lockheed SR71 BlackBird. How much better can it get? Sounds aeronautical to me. Unless you call it by it's nick name, Habu.

Crown Vics were just labeled interceptor by Ford. Engine wise, except for the alternator, it had the same power plant as any ford you could buy off the showroom floor. Back in the day, interceptors may have had GM's 454 or 455, A Chrysler 440 Magnum, or the Ford 460. The 383 Magnum was a common cruiser. The Crown Vic never came close to being what I would consider an Interceptor, even when chipped out. It was a sucked out luxury car with heavy duty suspension, brakes and alternator. Oh ya. It had a neat light overhead center front and cloth seats in the front, and cheap vinyl back seat, making it easy to clean out puke and bad guys shit after they have been chased and caught by the canines.
