Lost the key to my 7th gen VFR, it was my only key and the dealer just told me I have to pull the cylinder to get the code. How hard is this? any suggestions?

Get two cut. The first thing you do when you loose a key, GET ANOTHER ONE CUT!

You need to record your key #s in a secure notebook to make things easier.

Good one Squirrel. The easy solutions are sometimes the best. Something I used to do with combination number for my bike, shed pr whatever, was to copy the number someplace right where I would need it. But I would embed the combination number inside a longer number. Ya, sure, maybe someone would figure it out eventually. But then we could get struck by lightning too......:brick:

Keys for '14s are much more robust, laser cut. Which means more expensive! $26 for blank at dealer, and $30 to have it cut! Almost broke off key on my '03 in the seat lock, 20 miles from home, managed to bend back into shape enough to get it started and get home.

    Not tying to hijack.

1984 700- dealer says the key for the gas cap and seat it the same for the ignition. Is this true?

    For all vf's and vfr's?

Other bikes I've had were different.

6th gen, or at least the 06 is all one key. Seat, ignition and fuel. Any bags are different key though.

Reading through this makes me wonder if my key is chipped or not. Must look into that.

My 83 is keyed the same; ignition, gas cap & helmet holder, look on your keys, there should be a number like A50.

My keys almost look like house keys. Ignition switch must have been replaced. Got a blank at the dealer today- $8.89. Might look into getting locks re-keyed.

If your Honda has HISS on it then the key is chipped. If you lose your only key you are in for an expensive process. I think ecu must be replaced. An 06 VFR should have HISS. Just having a new key cut will not work as you need an already programmed key to use new key programmed.
For my black scooter I had a third key cut just in case.

Some of the big box stores have semi-automated key lathes. One feature is that they can detect chipped keys.

Just had a key duped for car I bought that will go into my wallet along with a duped bike and house key.

Walmart had the blank and the duped key was a couple of bucks and change.

Some may balk at putting 2-3 keys in a wallet, but they really don't take up much more room than that condom that's been in there for 15 years.

Not to worry. I sold it on Ebay to a collector.

Am I understanding that some places also sell the chipped keys such as Walmart? And not only do they cut them, they also have the ability to program the key? Or do they just detect the key as a coutesy to the key owner so he doesn't cut a useless key?

I've never had a vehicle - be it Jap, Euro, bike or car - with different keys, so in my experience that is the norm.

I had only one key for my VFR. I had contemplated getting a second one made for a long time but since I was going on a trip I decided to stop procrastinating and get it done. Now I carry a spare in my wallet when on the road. My quest for spare keys was further spurred on by something that happened at the shop. A cop, riding an ST1300 came in with a key broken off in his gas cap lock. Because he had a spare key he was able to ride it to the shop where they were able to remove the broken key with a couple of sharp picks. Had he not had a spare key he would have been stuck. Also, always press down on your gas cap to remove the load from the lock so you don't break the key off in it.

Working on the bike today putting the rear end back together, I checked the keys and the plastic ring around the ignition. No signs of HISS anywhere. Maybe it is a requirement in Australia and an option here, or not available here. Then again, maybe I have a chipped key, but it is just not advertised. Oh Well. I still have two keys so probably will never find out unless I loose one of them.

Not a clue. For three bucks a pop or so, I doubt it.

What to look for are other sources that perform the service other than a specific dealership. The chance that the devices that duplicate and "program" the chipped keys are somehow all different is slim. The programming IMO only duplicates what is on the original OEM key.

It would be a good idea if such a service exists to be prepared to show some form of ownership or registration paperwork. This even at a dealership.

Thanks for volunteering to do this.

My understanding of HISS is that the key chip has a unique ID and that needs to be recognised and accepted by the ECU. The ECU will only recognise 3 keys at a time. If you have no key then the ECU must be replaced with a new one.
