Just bought another one in need of rescue.

Have already written a couple of pages of jobs to do on it before it will see the road.

    I must be an idiot.

Does have an interesting exhaust and a brand new shorai li fe battery.

Pulled off most of the cooling system tonight. The hoses we're sort of coated internally with one sort of rust like scale. Means the cooling pipes in the v need to come off - bugger.

I will probably just install the two refurbished radiators I already have to save time.

Have now replaced all spark plugs with DP8EA9. For some reason the front cylinders had ND X24's in and the rears were X27's. Hotter in the back for some reason.

    Call me jealous. :beguiled:

One of these years I'll find a decent project VF1000. Until then I'll just watch threads like this one!

Why would it have hotter plugs in the back? Have you checked the carb jets yet to see if there's some good reason?

Will check the Jets when I pull the carbs to get to the coolant pipes under the carbs.
I know some of the overseas models of the v4's ran bigger jets in the back to make the rears run cooler but the plugs were always the same.

The '84 1000F (same motor I think as the '84 R - chain driven cams?) ran smaller jets in the rear, 150 F vs. 145 R, in the US. And I think the 27 is a colder plug.

    And great looking bike btw!

I think you are right about the plugs, the 27 is a colder plugs.
However it's gears all the way on an 84 R.

Pulled most of the cooling system off today, all the rubber hoses are coated internally with some sort of scale which looks like rust.
So carbys off next and into the coolant feed recesses for the cylinders.
Looks like the top water pipes from the jackets have all been leaking slightly so new orings all round and all other seals will be replaced.
The front lower bolt on the water pump broke off in the hole and defied all attempts to remove it. Now to decide whether to break out one of the NOS water pumps or take the time to work through the pile of used ones to find which ones don't leak.
