    Hi everyone,
My clutch is due for replacement and I was thinking on doing it myself.
I'm an aerospace engineer / CNC machinist and very mechanically biased.

I was looking firstly for advice on what brand of clutch to buy ?
Also if uprated springs would be an advantage over an OEM Honda kit??

Secondly are there any things I should be looking out for or checks I need to do when I fit it?

    Thanks guys :)

I changed my clutch springs today on my 5th gen. All i can say is it takes longer to scrape the old gasket off than doing the job! Really just follow the manual, it really is an easy job presuming you are only changing the discs, plates and springs. I used OEM springs as they were on the shelf and needed them ASAP.Barnett, EBC and Gecko all have good reviews but i stand to be corrected by better knowing guys than me. While you are at it pull the pushrod out and clean and grease it, i also turned mine round. Mines a 5th gen 2001, 25500 miles,so not sure how much difference there is between yours and mine.Only changed my springs because i was experiencing grabbing and lurching when pulling away. Turned out my existing springs were off a 98 - 99 engine and they were 3mm shorter than a 2001 engine. Also deglazed the clutch discs. Why are you changing the clutch, whats your mileage? A lot of guys get in excess of 70000 miles on theirs.

Hmmm. Looks like I may need to do a fair bit of maintenance before the next mega trip. Mine has 187,272 km (116,365 miles) and nothing has ever been done to the clutch except fluid replacement.

    hi all.

Ive taken my clutch apart ready for the new fiber plates and springs as the steel plates are in great condition.
Anyway I found these marks from the springs on the inner clutch drive.
Do I need to polish them out? will it make the clutch stick ??
    Help required people ???
    Thank you :)

Those marks are common. Be extra, extra careful not to over-tighten the spring bolts !!

I use a torque wrench for important bolts 12nm clutch spring bolts. When I took them off they where good. I've measured the plates. And spring free length and they are in great condition. The steel played are flat and not discoloured at all. So what can be causing the lurching as I set off from junctions?? Those spring grooved?? Or hydraulic? uploadfromtaptalk1427544495366.jpg uploadfromtaptalk1427544531619.jpg

I’ve heard the lurching can be caused by the shaft running from the clutch slave cylinder been sticky.
I took mine out cleaned it up and greased it and it was immediately better.
Also warm your bike up before you ride - 60 degrees Celsius

My last VFR800 had a grabby takeoff after 95000km, even when it was warm. I put new EBC fibre discs in and the clutch feel and action were like a new bike, very gradual and easy to modulate. I also added new springs but I don't think they made any difference to the clutch action.
