So my wife and I are still new to her 2008 VFR800. On Monday (about 65 degrees outside) we were doing some parking lot work and we were under 20 mph for 20 or 30 minutes. She noticed after about 10 minutes that the temp went up to 221 degrees. Yes the fan kicked in and the temp started to drop. I had her drive around at a little higher speed and the fan kicked off and the temp dropped in to the 180 range. So this is all good.

So the question that I have so we don't get nervous. What kind of temps should one expect to see on these bike when operating at low speeds and high speeds?

Sounds normal. At those speeds you're not moving enough air over the radiator, so naturally the engine temp will rise.

I'm still very new to my bike as well, but this seems par for the course (for mine). Short rides to the store, or to work, doing the posted speed limit have my bike running in the 200 or 220 range unless I take the long way home and let it breathe a bit. The vets can tell you better than I can though.

Yep. Right on with what TNR said.

These girls run hot, no doubt. As long as that fan comes on at 220-222, doing what it should. Believe fan kicks off around 210-212.

    Gonna revive an old thread...

What if the fans DON'T come on around that temp? I haven't checked yet if they do or not but the other day while idling she climbed into the 250's and the temp light came on. No coolant from the overflow so that's good. I ordered a thermostat and new coolant but I'm wondering now if I need a fan switch...

The system is set for the light to come on at 250. if she didn't shut herself down hopefully you did!! If it were mine I would test the fan switch first and if it was good then replace the thermostat.

it got to 252 and I jumped on it and rode low throttle until it came down to 195 and then shut her off

Already ordered a t-stat but I'm off tomorrow so I'll test the fan switch. Where is the fan switch located on these?

While you're fiddling in there you can put a 3way switch to manually turn the fan on and off

If the fan isn't kicking on then it's gonna climb that high. Also you said it came down to 195? What does it run when you're on the highway? If it's 170-180 you definitely don't have a thermostat stuck in the closed position and just wasted your money. Check the fan first.

Before the fan upgrade mine would hit 220 very fast and I would start getting scared around 230. It never caused any damage but it was high enough for me to take the time and money into upgrading. Now the fan kicks on around 195 and so far the bike has not gone over 205

Okay a little fiddling got her up to 225 with no fan.

Single pin fan switch makes me think it's a grounding switch? If I ground out the connector it should turn the fan on correct?

EDIT: Applying ground to the fan switch connector caused it to rock slightly but not turn so I think I have a bad fan. I'm going to remove the fan and see if I can just power and ground it and get it to spin that way...

EDIT2: Direct power and ground to the fan still doesn't get the fan to spin.

    I need a fan.

Check for debris stuck in the fan blade/shroud. You should be able to freely spin the fan by hand.

It's not unusual for grass or other objects to lodge there, stop the fan spinning, and take out the fuse when it tries to.

Fan spins freely by hand. Fuse is okay, grounding out the temp switch lights up a test light at the fan connector.

Does a 5th generation model fan work on a 6th gen?

You could look up the part number eg Partzilla and see if is common to both models. I would guess that it will be the same.

Different parts entirely but I'm wondering if I can make it work...connectors look similar...I'm gonna give it a try...it's $25 vs $115 on ebay...
