Anyone know haw many amps the starter pulls? I did check the FSM this time but it does not have the info I need.

Trying to crank it and push out extra oil but the battery is fookered and I do not want to buy a new one until spring. I have a 40amp power supply but my estimate on the draw is closer to 60A; again though, not sure and not wanting to blow up the power supply.

Mrs. is gone with the car for a week so I cannot jump it but I can pester my neighbour if that's the way it needs to be.

Just plug your starter directly into your wall outlet...

(I have nothing constructive to add to this thread) :congratulatory:

You know, turn the engine, drive the oil pump, pump out any oil left in the system, in order to get every last drop.

Get your self one of the jump start battery packs, good for the car too.

If you removed the plugs to eliminate compression pressure, the starter would probably draw fewer amps.

If you do push out the residual oil i think it's mandatory to pre-fill the oil filter b4 mounting it up, otherwise engine bearings will run dry for a significant several seconds.

Why the hell would you purposefully ruin an engine at all without oil?

Just want to turn the pistons a couple times to pump out the extra. This bike has sat untouched since 2003 so I'm not trusting any of the fluids.

I did basically they same thing last summer to my '83 after sitting for 10 years. Used my portable battery pack to spin the motor with the oil still in it, squirted some oil in the cylinders first, then let it drain throughly. Changed the oil in my '14 VFR using Amsoil pure synthetic, and put used Amsoil (perfectly good) in the '83 to flush it out. Got '83 running and after a few miles put fresh Amsoil in it.

OK, it borders on OCD, but i usually do it too, although i think it's unnecessary. No real advantage to it. Running a few seconds with no pressure until the oil filter gets refilled can result in engine bearing damage, so fill by hand, pouring about 2/3 quart over 1/4 hour, allowing time for absorption.

Then turn it by hand, spare your engine. There is a small cover on the right side of the engine, take it off and put a ratchet and socket on it. Pulling the plugs will make it a lot easier.

Thanks for the support gentlemen (and ladies?). I'll crank by hand with the plugs out and be sure to fill the filter before firing it up in the spring. Will update this thread then too because I still want to know... just because.

People who've never tried it think that hand-filling the filter will cause major spillage problems, but that's NOT CORRECT ! :crushed:

It takes a few minutes for the oil to soak in completely, but filling to about 1/2 inch below the hole works best.

Nobody would fit an oil filter without filling it first... would they???
