You can always cut a section out of the inside to knock the damage out then weld a patch back on the inside. Not that the shop couldn't do it they didn't want to because the costs add up and by the time the tank has been repainted you could be up for $1000 or more and people say piss off and the shop is left with a tank they can't get rid of

The 86 VF500F (not a VFR) is unique even within the 3 years of the Interceptor 500. 84-85 had smaller petcocks and hence different mounting holes. The 86 is gravity fed, whereas the 84-85 have fuel pumps. The larger petcock and fuel outlet aided in the gravity feed because it was split into two after coming out of the tank to the carbs.

That being said, in my opinion an 84 - 85 tank (and petcock) will not present fuel starvation issues used as gravity fed unless under highly improbable fuel demands.

Whoa... that's the only time I've seen the same seat cover I have on my 86.

Someone just had a thread here about a tank repair he had done by another forum member after the shops said it couldn't be done. Zoom-zoom, I think? Someone who has been here longer than I will surely point it out.

Yes, it was Zoom Zoom. Although the dent on the tank in this thread appears to be a bit larger than the last one ZZ fixed up.

The dent can be fixed by any one of several methods. Pressurize the tank and see if the diverter valve is leaking first. Can't tell from the pix.

Auto shops shy away from motorcycle repair. The bucks will be in the repaint. The new paint will not match the old paint.

Try the canned air/ heat gun method. The oot lay is maybe 3-4 pesos. Be careful using a heat gun at 1500 watts. It will melt any decals or graphics and if not kept moving, will blister the OEM paint.

For the dent repair for sure look around for one of the shops that uses the inside tools to push the dent out. It may work and it may not work if saving the original paint is the criterion. Paint technology changes on a very regular basis and that paint on the bike is considered old stuff.

For a more conventional repair try a body and fender place run by recent folks to the US who are not so exclusive. ie Mexicans, Russians or Koreans. Or source oot a shop that does bikes and advertises same.

Me too. Nothin like regular brushing and flossing. This is not only healthy but keeps all those dentists from buying Harleys and calling themselves, Doctor Mad Dog.

"The older I get, the faster I was"

Not sure who started that one but it's now on the WWW in ten languages and in every Tshirt shop's software on the planet.

Well my woes come back. I bought a tank from a member on the forum. Unfortunately he thought the tank was an 1986 and it was actually a 1985. Pet cocks are different from 85 to 86. Is there a way to make an 85 tank fit an 86? I was reading somewhere that the 86 was gravity feed while the 85 was fuel pump. Any conversion ideas? I have looked all over for an 86 tank and cant find one. mine works just dented to hell

Unless it is to suggest that you plug the 85 petcock and make a hole where the new one goes...

I really have no idea what I'm talking about though

You mean like in your very own thread?

Get a Y fitting that goes from the 85 petcock fuel line size to 2 the size of the carb fuel inlets.

Might have to get crafty, but it is doable. You may have first go up to the 86 size with an adapter and then split the new larger size with a Y to the carbs.

I was looking for an image along the lines of "this thread is useless without pictures" and then this came up:

But yeah, pictures. Show us the tank and location. (us = those who have not seen the difference between the two = me)
