My son and I are traveling across the US on my 2002 VFR and my son's 2006 Buell Uly. We are leaving from Scottsdale AZ(Phoenix) to Austin TX for the MotoGP then off to Key West FL. From there we are going up to Columbia SC to see my middle son then back across America. Should be about 7000 miles and 30ish days. Across the country on the VFR!

Here's a video preview of what's to come! It's 46 days and 8,500 miles in a couple of minutes!

Post up often. Have fun. Some quality time with your boy. Most of all, ride safe. I have a pipe dream to do a round Canada USA trip for several months but that is really a pipe dream. Wished my boy would be interested in bikes but he is not.

That sounds like an awesome trip. Keep us posted. If the uly bites the dust you can snag the foot pegs if you want a little more leg room on the vfr hehe

The informal poll seems to be "trending" towards the sane rather than the crazy..

We started off doing a Ironbutt SS1000... I know crazy right? Here we are just outside of Globe AZ. We left Scottsdale AZ at 5PM and our plan was to drive through the night to Dallas TX, 1069 miles! All jacked up on 5 hour energy and Amps!

I hate gas staion pics but it's 1AM in El Paso TX.

Random dog at a closed gas station at 3AM, surprisingly feeling pretty good.

Uh oh... Starting to have problems with my Viffer!! Running rich, and loading up at idle...
    Really bad gas mileage too...
starting to run rough in West Texas...

Had to give up on the Ironbutt in Abilene TX... Bummer...

Quick search of the forums here and it's pointing out to the fuel pressure regulator...

Yep, gas dumping in through the vacuum lines. No one has one either... Have to forge on to Austin and the MotoGP!

Forget Dallas and let's head to the hill country of Central Texas. Nice back roads and beautiful country. Everyone has been really nice in Texas so far. It's spring here!

Llano TX is a great stop! A really beautiful town.
Here's the bridge over the Llano river.

As long as I keep the revs up it runs decent. Bad gas mileage though... Took a breather in Llano

Hope you get the engine issue sorted out. It would be a real shame not to swing by the Barber Motorsports museum near Birmingham, Alabama on your way. That place is friggin' amazing!!

Too bad about the mechanical issues. Hope someone here might be able to post up a solution you can utilize on the road. Sorry, but I can't help you that way. Your bike should do the trip. Mine has bee on many long and hard rides and it jas 196,000 km and more. I habe had two breakdowns thouvh. Both were stators but that, I'm sure is not your problem here.

BTW. Fabulous photos. Keep them coming and keep safe.

Divrnr, can you order a fuel pressure reg and have it sent somewhere up the road for ya? Or to your sons place in SC? That issue must be taking a little off your fun factor. Best of luck.

Sounds like a great trip of father and son. That's so cool. Good for both of you. Sorry to hear about the bad running bike. If you can't call local Honda shops to see if they have one in stock? Might get lucky. Or like was said have it shipped up ahead.

Though the bike problems is what makes this trip different and great for memories. It's all part of the adventure. Keep up the pics.

The Viffer runs!! I ordered a fuel pressure regulator from Kent's Powersports in Austin. Just came in today and I installed it in the parking lot of Motel 6. Now it runs perfect! I looked at all the threads and found the easy way to do it and it was easy. Had it running in less than an hour. Now off to New Orleans but will be fighting storms all the way along the Gulf. Plan on camping at Holly Beach LA then off to NOLA. Wish us luck!
