Tail Bag Reccomendations

Hi All, getting ready for some road time on my VFR up here in Alaska. I'm looking for a tail bag. The Nelson Rigg 1060 looks like about the right size but I want one that the straps can run underneath the seat. Does anyone know if this is possible ? If not I'm certainly up to hearing other ideas. Cortech has nice ones IMO, it is what I use.

 

Tailbags with straps are going to move no matter how they are attached. The straps will chafe your paint IMO.. Check out Venturas racks. They bolt on, do not move and with some minor mods, all sorts of soft luggage can mate up.

Other racks can work too. For a few pesos more, check out Giant Loop for alternative type soft luggage.

 

Can't really say much about others since never used, but I have the Cortech bought about 8 years ago and still going strong. Has attachment points so you can hook saddlebags to them. I have looked at a few of the Nelson and they look nice but not sure how they hold up.

 

I bought this bag a while back when it was a little less money. I use it on my 5 Gen and does great for day trips. Also have one for my 6 Gen which I use from time to time, but the one for the 5 Gen I just leave it on the bike all the time.

Yup, that is it. One I have is just like RVFR but in black.

 

Respectfully disagree. I use a Cortech and it never comes off the bike except to get under the seat once in a great while, my paint is perfect, and it doesn't move around at all if you just strap it to the grab handles tight. I put a microfiber piece of cloth in one place on my 8th gen. on each side to protect the paint from the straps. They are a GREAT tail bag. Tank bags drive me nuts.

This would be great information if it were true on all bikes. Maybe a Cortech tank bag might not affect you quite so much. %)

 

He asked in reference to a VFR. I've used one on a 5th, 6th, and now 8th gen. very successfully and easily. But, it's a personal decision, he asked for input, and he got it.

What if the OP has more than one bike? What if he really likes the Nelson-Rigg over the Cortech or decides on another brand or design? What if he finds a combination tank and tail bag or packs it wrong with a bunch of heavy shit on top and it does shift? What if the Cortech (which one) doesn't allow running the straps under the seat? What if I told you I have been painting bikes for awhile and that strapping shrinks with age, expands and contracts due to wicking and subsequent drying and that the easy way to see if that abrasive strapping is removing paint is to look more closely and what if I told you , I have a doubled five foot section of Polarfleece I use if I'm packing camping gear on the ass end of my "mach 1 91". The BMW and the Yamaha do not go camping with me . I sold the 1200 and the KRTT ain't got no brakes unless I do a changeup on the wheels and struts.

Are those mountains in the South of Nebraska or Kansas?

 

Me? Thanks if so, That's a first generation Cortech on my bike, I've had it since 06, love it, another cool thing is it expands easily, I can get more than I first thought I'm thing it's 17L.
