    Tampering with a vin plate is ill advised. Ilegal in many places. Check first with either your local law enforcement's Auto Theft Unit or your DMV. They may not offer advice on how to, but will advise on if it is lawful. Tampering with a vin can lead to intense scrutiny and even temporay siezure of your bike while they complete an investigation. In the end, you will likely get your bike back, but do you want to go through that?

    I understand all of that and will be switching necks with the stamped bin as well. I know people have had frames powder coated and just wondering what they have done with the side vin plates.

    Normally you can tape over the plate and not get paint/coating on it. Works well.

    You should be able to apply for a title most likely with a bill of sale or such. I guess it depends on how you got it and if its stolen or not. Big offense for screwing with VIN plates in most states. Check your DMV.

    Agree with Grey. Make some phone calls to someone who can give you proper answers. Auto theft units or DMV. Why risk trouble for the sake of a few phone calls? There is probably a simple solution to your issue. Good advice is useless if you don't follow it.

    The VIN plate on one of my 1000Rs was heavily damaged / partially missing. I just removed it before powder coating. The stamp in the neck is the definitive ID and the one you don't want to screw with.

    Some Hondas are just stickers for the VIN "plate" But they are always stamped in the frame somewhere.

    Thanks kinda what I was wondering the stamp on the neck would be correct. Maybe I won't even worry about the plate thing.

    Besides changing the neck isn't anything any different then what any guy building a chopper is doing. It's the same as racking a bike or adding a hard tail. Frame alteration is comen. I do agree taking the side plate and putting it on the wrong frame is a bad idea. But I would imagine the side plate comes off regularly. The stamped vin on the neck is what is important.

    Vanishing Numbers

    I Powder Coated one of my frames last year. I did the Sand Blasting myself (saved $50).
    Beware that the Serial Numbers stamped on the Steering Head don't have much Relief.
    After Sand Blasting they are harder to read.
    Then, after Powder Coating they may disappear;
    [IMG]
    The Powder Coating can be quite thick. Luckily I photo'd the numbers before I began.

    The VIN Tag will chisel off easily. The pins are copper or brass.

    I recommend removing the VIN Tag, not taping it.
    They PreHeat the whole Frame at 350'F for 10 min to sterilize/burn off Contaminants.
    Not sure if the VIN Paint will take it.

    Afterwards you have to clean out some threads, so have your Tap Set ready;
    [IMG]

    The plan is to use self tapping screws to put it back on;

    But, it seems to go faster without it,,..

    That VIN plate won't take the powder coating process, mine was destroyed. Carefully remove it and you should be ok. You can ask the powder coater
    not to put to thick of a coat on the neck vin so it is easier to see.

    In the states, it's a federal bust. Details are here:

    https://www.justice.gov/usam/crimin...removing-motor-vehicle-identification-numbers.

    This is a best defense/offense thing. The VIN on a bike is the engine number and most are stamped on the headstock.

    Best defense is to not get mouthy with the cop..Or, get a change of venue to a Federal Court and talk to the prosecutor before the judge arrives. Fed judges are usually not disposed to mess with minor violations.

    Removal of the plate can be done with solvents. Pry up a corner an apply some paint thinner with a small brush to the adhesive. Heat can help too. Warm only a bigass heat gun will blister paint in a hurry. Other hot solvents are not a good idea.

    The Honda VIN does not match the engine number. There are ranges that the engine number will fall in listed in the Honda Identification Guide, but they do not match.
