Is the light above the plate REQUIRED by law? Or can it be removed and still be legal? I live in Tennessee.

I took mine off during the trim up thy rear fender process. But I believe DOT regs say it's suppose to be there by how the law reads. If it's an issue which so far it has not been one from being stopped more than a couple times, the rear plate light never comes up. There are after maket plate bolts that have LED lights in em so thats a good back up plan, so till I get told it's a have to have, I'm leaving well enough alone for now.

I'm sure it does, just like when you put on most, if not all, aftermarket pipes.

I just installed a Comp Werkes kit, and the mtg plate has holes drilled in them to mount the stock lic plate light. Mines an '05 VFR. Kenji

I did a fender clean-up and considered going lite-less. After considering the local authorities though I thought some lite would be wise. I used a low profile LED light that I found on line. Turned out pretty sharp. Check it out in my gallery under fenderectomy.

    Light

When I cut my fender I eliminated the license plate light. Being the paranoid type I am I cut the bottom out of the tail light lense then covered it with a clear plastic piece which allow light on to the plate. Works ok and is probably close to legal. The only draw back is that it gets brighter when the brake light is applied
