Just changed out the air filter on my 2010 and remembered DynaJohn from another thread suggesting removal of the silver screen on the intake side of the VFR12 air filter.
I did it and am waiting for our recent wet weather to go away.
I suspect it was for intake sound deadening on the EPA sound testing.
I also just popped Don Guhls handiwork into the ECM.
Got to remove the ZBomb as well.
Hopefully tomorrow is dry and I can take her out and see what's what.
The middle cowling and tank covers aren't that bad as long as you keep in mind how it's snapped together. The shop manual is short but direct about the Tupperware.
The main thing is to look into the openings next to the headlight from in front and line up the slots and keep the juxtaposition of the whole thing in mind.
There is some real thought put into the design and it reminds me a bit of origami.
This bike continues to impress me.

I expect you will like the results. I have been taking those damn sneeze screens off stock air filters since my first ZX-11 in 1991 as suggested by Rob Muzzy. Never had a problem as a result. No problem with sound from filter here as I am partially deaf from the exhaust on my 124 C.I. HD.

Yeah, my hearing is nothing to write home to mom about either after riding for the past 50+ years, despite ear plugs.
Hard to tell how much it contributes but it couldn't flow optimally as OEM.
The Guhl reflash makes it a real rocket, so there's that.
    Thanks for the tip.

    Hi Hailwood.
Did you notice any improvement when removing the screen?
Can you hear more intake noise?

    Ozzybob, Happy New Year !!
No change in intake noise and can't tell whether it improved performance as it was installed simultaneously with a Guhl flashed ECU.
I mean, the Guhl re-flash is so impressive that I can't tell what, if any, difference the plate removal made but just looking at the thing, I can't see how it would be be detrimental to remove a sold metal plate with a dozen quarter sized holes drilled in it from the intake pathway. I figured the ECU would adjust the A/F ratio accordingly.
I left the wire screen in place and otherwise, the air box itself I left OEM as is the remainder of the machine (except replacing the coolant with Evans Waterless).
I'm not sure nibbling around the edges like removing the sneeze screen would be appreciable from the saddle but I was doing the ECU anyways and the filter needed replacing so it's an easy/ cheap modification.

    Thanks Hailwood.
Sounds like I'll definitely have to get my ecu flashed, either by guhl or ecunleashed here in Australia.
I need more info on the local product first though.

After you have the ECU flashed, you will understand why Honda dumbed down the power in 1st and 2nd.
Injudicious throttle application in theses gears as you get moving can extend your arms in a vigorous and very interesting fashion.
