    Hey guys,
Was riding the past few days and kept smelling something like hot oil every time i stopped but couldn't see any smoke or drips when I looked. Yesterday I pulled up to a stop light and a wiff of smoke passed me and I hopped off to check right then at the light. Couldn't see anything at all. Got to where I was going a few minutes later and popped it up on the center stand and stuck my head underneath and saw oil on the pipes. Let it cool off and checked the oil level and it was still pretty much full. When I came out that afternoon after work to head home only a few drops of oil had made their way to the pavement and the oil level was still good so I rode home. Today I took the left side fairing off and it appears the K&N 204 oil filter was leaking around the bolt on the end of the filter used to remove the oil filter. When I first bought the bike I thought the previous owner had used the bolt to tighten the filter and cracked it because it was doing the exact same thing, leaking oil from the bolt. After replacing, it was fine for several thousand miles when I replaced the oil filter again. This time I did the oil change and made sure not to tighten using the bolt on the end of the filter knowing it causes problems, however it STILL ended up leaking. When I removed the fairing I could see the oil leaking out of the seam where the bolt meets the filter. Anyone else have the same problem with this filter? Ive used K&N filters on all my vehicles for years and never had a problem with anything. Wondering if I should use a different oil filter. The one that ended up leaking only had a few hundred miles on it as I just did an oil change not too long ago. I replaced with another K&N 204.

You're not the first one. There are a number of these problems.

Anne Marie was lucky to not crash or loose a motor when her K&N filter failed on her recent marathon ride

I have a friend who just went to Alaska on his tiger and his k&n did exactly the same thing. K&n are producing real crap I stopped using their products about 7 years ago when the filter on my car gave me problems. Not only do they fail to keep oil in but they also fail at filtering the oil

Sometimes it makes you wonder how K&N keep going, people have bitched about their products for years

I SMH, why is it folks are still using the KN oil filter when we all know it ain't worth crap.. Just saying. In this case you don't even get what you paid for, other than trouble. OEM or WIX.. Done!

    I've used Wix from
O'Rilleys a few times and just use the OEM Honda filters now.

Well this is all very disappointing. Sad to see such a big name end up with such crappy products. I figured I could trust them. Perhaps ill switch out this filter sooner rather than later.

With so much at stake, I wouldn't wait. I switched immediately on my 03 when I found out about all the problems. Like many I was trusting my experience with their air filters.

Ask AM about her K&N oil filter experience ... they are a bad design with that nut on the end.

I use Wix and occasionally HiFlo Filtro.

Honda OEM filters are not expensive, they work fine and unlike K&N don't carry the risk of suddenly leaving an oil slick coating your rear wheel.

Sorry their idea of fit for purpose is abysmal and inevitably the name of K&N has dropped off a cliff. Personally I will never consider any of their products and if asked will always recommend OEM filters - or if you are on a tight budget suggest you visit Walmart rather than risk anything from K&N.

I don't when this website was last updated but it has a handy cross reference sheet for oil filters, plus a couple of cool links to check out.
