Being an idiot, I let my 1986 (Euro fully faired) VF500F2F roll off the side stand and fall into a steel crash barrier.
The tank is now creased and very badly damaged. :crushed:

Thankfully, the rest of the bike was untouched.

So if anyone has a red white and blue tank in good condition they want to part with, let me know. I get the impression good ones are very rare these days.
    Could be a long wait...

My mechanic knocked my bike of it's centre stand and damaged the fuel tank and I am in need of one.

I can tell you they are hard to find in good condition, but the price some want that do have them is pretty steep. I've come across a few that are either in worse condition as mine or rusty and dented to sh*t!

Yeah spotted that alright. Wrong colour and wrong year though.
Shipping and import duties would make it hugely expensive.
If it was the right year and colour would certainly consider it.

If anyone out there has experience of what's repairable and what isn't here's a link to before and after pictures.

The tank was in excellent condition before. It is worse than the pictures convey, because the right side is deformed too.
If it could be repaired I might try as it's corrosion free.

So is there a big difference between the 84, 85 & 86 tanks fitment wise?

See above. As far as I know just the petcock fitting flange. The petcocks are significantly different too.

Ah I see, typical. I found a guy in Ontario with a parts bike same colour as yours, but his is an 84.

If I come across an 86 whilst I am looking for one I will let you know.

    Thanks.
Can't be an 84 if its like mine though, unless it's repainted. They introduced that red/white/blue paint scheme in 86, in Europe anyway.

My first port of call would be a local car body shop and ask them if they can do anything with it.
Some of those guys are miracle workers.

Thanks. Well as close to mint as a 30 year old bike that is used can be. However one has to be sanguine about these things. The rest of the bike is fine and, it is after all just a petrol tank.
I have made contact with a petrol tank repair specialist so fingers crossed.

I had just sorted the carbs too. 32mm 84 carbs with #42 slow jets, #95 front and #92 rear main jets. Max GPS speed was 113mph. Best I'd ever seen on it.

    A sort of happy ending.
A body shop in the UK repaired and repainted my tank. Cut out a big section of the base, panel beat it back into shape, welded it back up, lined it with petrol/ethanol resistant epoxy, painted it. I supplied Honda Wing decals which are not exactly the same but close enough. As an interesting aside, the white stripe on the OE tanks is not paint, it is also a decal. However these are unobtainable so he painted it on. I am very pleased with it. I am glad I am old and do not drink or have other expensive pastimes as it was a very costly repair. However real expertise does not come cheap and I do not feel I paid too much at all.
Here's a picture of the repaired tank. I refer to the post above if you want to see the consequences of my cackhandedness when I mangled it.

I am happy you managed to get it sorted out at least and that you are happy with the outcome.

Can I ask how much the body shop charged you for all of the work?

More than the cost of that new tank linked above. Most of the cost was labour.

That tank looks brand new ! The shop you used certainly knew what they were doing.
You've got your bike back on the road and that's priceless.
