    Hi,

I just recently purchased a 1985 Honda Interceptor 500 that needed a new tank as the old one rusted out. The guy I bought the bike from started the job but misplaced the fuel petcock. So after a month or 2 of tracking down a new petcock, I finally received it in the mail yesterday.

My question is there a gasket that goes in between the petcock and the tank and if so how thick should it be? I do know about the O-ring and in the process of tracking one down now, thankfully its a pretty common part used in cars and bikes so it shouldn't be hard to find at all.

    Many thanks

    Will

There was no gasket on my 86 tank, just the very thin O ring .

Honda made this petcock riveted shut so you can't replace the packing gasket and a new OEM petcock will cost about $200

You should be able to get a kit off e-bay and some kits are good if you are mechanically inclined.

Attached a diagram hoping this may help you.

OK, you heard the bike run b4 buying ?? If not, get ready to clean alot of rust from the carbs.

Did you do any reading on this or other fora about the possible problems of buying a non-running VF500? If you haven't ridden and confirmed that the engine is running sweetly, you're betting against very long odds.:confused-new:

Lovely little bike if it runs, but most don't, and valve problems are common.

Nazdee job ... and it has to be done thoroughly or you're pulling them out again. Their a PITA to get in and out on those older bikes, especially if the boots are stiff, which they usually are due to age.

Take your time and clean them thoroughly (ie; once).

Thanks for the reply's much appreciated!

Now to answer your questions yes the bike runs beautifully and the engine appears to have been rebuilt just prior to me buying the bike, its funny how a simple question about a gasket in between the tank and petcock got turned around into rebuilding the carbs...

    T
I thank you for your concern and yes I've been through the forums and own the clymers manual and there isnt any mention about a gasket anywhere but it looked like there might be one (and made sense that there would be as well) about 2 to 3 mm thick.

    Anyways thanks again

Sorry but i don't see how that engine could have been "rebuilt" since most rebuild parts are no longer available new, crank bearings, for example........unless i'm mistaken. :disturbed:

Bike has 41000 km on odometer, no ticks/knocks, no hesitation on throttle input, and clean oil didn't even a have slight tint after running it. The bike may not look like she's new but she sure runs like it.

I will be posting more about the bike in another thread down the road.

MOD this thread may be closed.

    Thanks again for your help!
