So I bought the bike a few months ago and haven't had the time to get her going until now. A few days ago so decided to pull the carbs... So much fun that is.

Anyway today I took the carbs to my buddy's shop to get the ultrasonic treatment.

Okay so a couple of basic questions and thoughts...

What should be the idle be set at (roughly)?

What is the temp gauge position at full operating temperature?

I plan to replace the spark plugs, sprockets and chain as well as flushing the clutch and brake fluid and the cooling system (replacing thermostat) and replacing the air filter.

I have done the oil and filter as well as the fuel filter. Anything else I missed?

Change the fluid on your forks and shock.
    Check valves
battery (clean terminals, water level, resting voltage, key on voltage)
    check/clean regulator connections
    Brakes pads and rotors (check)
Find and replace any leaky seals
    Test thermostat, and fan switch

Not sure if all of the above is needed but it certainly couldn't hurt. Not sure what the service manual has to say about the upcoming 20 year service interval.

    Oh yeah almost forgot,
    Lube throttle and choke cables
Check / clean and repack wheel bearings. Also a winter tear down job.

Sounds like you have been pretty thorough, with bikes it's more like an ounce of prevention....can keep you and your bike in one piece.
    Good job

With mine being 30+ years old and the PO of 12 years obviously not a mechanic or an avid rider, I went through it fairly thoroughly as well.
Haven't cleaned and repacked the swingarm bushings, steering head bearings, wheel bearings and such but all seemed to be in OK shape. I can't get side to side movement from the swingarm with heavy hand pressure but I feel what might be a small amount of give while riding.

    Peace

So I just found the owners manual. Idle is 1100 rpm plus or minus 100 rpm.

As an update... I have changed the oil and filter, and replaced the regulator which shortly took a poop after I got it running (luckily no burning of wires). I purchased two aftermarket spares as well. A VFRness and upgraded starter solenoid wiring are going into place as well.

I still have to flush the brakes and clutch and coolant but it's getting closer to being rideable in the midst of winter...

Looks awesome and sounds great. You found a good deal there. Would also be interested in seeing a pic of the 1000 Hurricane if you happen to have handy. Always liked those bikes as well as the VFR. Congrats on getting it running.

I am actually looking to sell the Hurricane cheap if you are interested lol. I haven't ridden it in years. It's been sitting in a garage and I can't even find the title.

So here is my update for today. I rode the bike for the first time a few days ago and the clutch was slipping in higher revs. I was heartbroken. Anyway, I flushed the clutch master cylinder and installed a full clutch kit (springs and all) today. I also replaced all four spark plugs. No time for a test beyond the centerstand today but I will try to report back Sunday or Monday.

By the way to those wondering how to replace the front spark plugs more easily... Get a Ninja 250 OEM spark plug tool.. they fold so you can fit while you push out the radiator. Although I was able to do the left front cylinder, the right side seemed near impossible to do without that tool.

Well it turns out I replaced the clutch for nothing... It turns out that despite flushing out a 100ml of fluid through the clutch the first time, it wasn't enough. I had to reflush it again today and now the clutch works perfect... Very displeased for wasting the money but atleast she is roadworthy.

Too late... new clutch installed as well as chain and sprockets... best part? I cracked the rivet on master so I get to install it again.
