I traded a pickup for a VF700 Interceptor that needed some cosmetic work. One of the main things is this dent in the gas tank. Any ideas on how to get it out, or should I get another online?

Fill it with water close all holes hermetically and put it on the freezer.
Maybe you'll need to do it twice.

I tried that once with no luck. Probably did not seal the holes tight enough, ymmv. I'd worry about rust inside later on.
You could probably use a dent puller, but then you have holes to weld up or otherwise fix. :lemo:

You might as well want to start looking on ebay or Craigslist.. IDK, but don't think that'll rub out .

If the current tank isn't rusty inside, The entire exterior of the tank needs to be taken down to bare metal IMO.. The fix for the dent is standard bodywork stuff. One of those outfits that work from the inside to push out dents might work. Not a clue as to the cost.

The dent doesn't look that deep and unless there is no open fissure, one of the Bondo products should work. A book on body and paintwork is helpful when approaching jobs like this.

That looks to be a good sized ding. Any dent repair company around? They might have the tools or knowledge to do it, but don't expect it to be perfect.

I don't have a freezer large enough or that I'm willing to put my gas tank in, so I didn't try that, though I could see it working. I tried the air compressor mentioned in some other posts, but it didn't want to pop out and there's only so much pressure I'm willing to pump into it. It seems the PO had previously patched up some holes with gobs of epoxy.

Huh, that gobs of epoxy seem to be a problem by itself... I would sand it all out, check holes, clean all rust, cut it in half if there is rust inside, and weld it all back again... But thats a major welding job, and you've got to pay a lot for it....
If you just want the looks and a temporary fix, you culd just fill that part with putty and paint it all over...
    Its all up to you.

Whoa, that's a serious ding :numbness: I'd guess about $400 with paint. A shop will strip it, weld puller tabs on, pull it out, grind it smooth, fill it, paint it. But I'm focusing on the crack-looking scar near the petcock holes — is that just a drip or is it actually cracked?

Not only a big dent, but looks like a poor job fixing rust along the bottom edge.
