My White 2014 VFR was stolen in San Diego this evening. I know this is a long shot, but I figured it can't hurt to have more people aware.

I just got off the phone with the police and the insurance. Not much more to do tonight.

I had just setup a ride to the desert this weekend too.

Wow, that is awful news - hopefully they will find it in one piece. Was it parked somewhere with surveillance cameras around?

Turn it in to your insurance. They will likely give you more than real market value for it and go buy a new one at current discounts and pocket some cash.

That sounds great. Where do I sign up. My experience with insurance isn't so rosy. I've never claimed a stolen vehicle before, but when my Camaro was totalled, I had to fight to the the point of threatening to get a lawyer involved before they finally gave me fair market value. I never have good luck on things of this nature.

FWIW I had two totals, both bikes and in both cases it was a snap, less the prove it's value, which in the first one was easy being I was just coming back from the Ducati dealership where we figured what I get for a trade in on a 1098. The second one wasn't any worse. So being the 014 is still fairly new, hopefully there's no reason to think you won't get close to what you paid for it. In that, yes the 014s can be found at great pricing now.

    Lock your stuff up folks.
Even if you think it's totally safe where you are.
    Thieves suck.

    Grrrr....

Lowlifes, taking someone else's hard-earned stuff. Hope it works out well for you, whether recovered or compensated/replaced.

But you'll never get the same planned weekend ride back, that is a real loss, IMO.

    Update.

Well, my bike was recovered by the Highway Patrol tonight. The thief got away, but they have him on video admitting he stole the bike. It's only a matter of time before he gets himself caught for something else and they tack this charge on to his other pending warrant.*

I'll take pics tomorrow, but the bike is trashed

The typical drill is the insurer will send out an adjuster who will appear to be a clone of Forrest Gump before somebody shot him up with steroids who will want you to sign off on the "trashed" bike. IMO, Don't!

Conjure up The California State Insurance Commission and wave that at him or her. (Forestanne)

Ya might even want to take the bike to a certified dealer you trust for an written evaluation of the damages.

Never a good thing to hear of a trashed bike. Glad they got the bugger though.

Damn. I'm so sorry it was recovered so trashed.
Good luck with trying to get the moto sorted now.

Hope he is caught quickly before he ruins anyone else's property.

    Well done Highway patrol!

Sadly I think you are now stuck in the proverbial rock and a hard place. So if your don't really need the bike back immediately, do not rush to make decisions until you have personally viewed the recovered bike. There is "trashed" and "really trashed", and even when you have seen it you still have no idea what abuse your bike received from the thief and his mates whilst they had it.

Ultimately you are going to be faced with at least two choices - do you accept back and then fix the recovered bike or do you take whatever insurance settlement is offered? In Europe you can often opt for a hybrid solution provided the insurers consider it is an economic write off due mostly to cosmetic damage, in which case they may agree to pay you the write off valuation but you then pay them something to buy back the damaged motorbike so you can arrange repairs. Inherently insurers cannot take risks putting any damaged vehicle back on the road. So any repairs would usually need to use genuine new parts and incur main dealer labour rates which mount up rapidly, meaning that even for a three year old motorbike, it may quickly become uneconimc to repair especially if several fairing panels have been damaged. Obviously if you decided to re-purchase the bike you might be prepared to do much of the work yourself and either repair the damaged panels or fit used parts which could be a lot cheaper.

Even so none of the options is an ideal choice, so don't be rushed, and think through the knock on impact on your future insurance premiums. I am not sure insurance in the USA works in the same way as Europe. Over here this incident will count as an "at fault claim" which will usually loose your no claims bonus and push up insurance premiums in future years even if the police eventually track down the thief.

I hope you find a solution which you are happy with.
