I really love my 2014 VFR800 but I got to wondering the other day what I would buy if I HAD to trade in my VFR. I have no idea what bike I would go for. I love the full on sport bikes but I don't want to lean over that far and want to be able to ride a 500 mile day without hurting when the ride is over. My VFR is plenty fast, gets great gas mileage, looks great and nothing breaks. I just turned 15,000 miles in 24 months which is quite a bit here in Colorado.

What would you replace yours with?

For me that's an easy question - definitely the S1000RR - I had a chance to test ride one at the AIMExpo and it blew me away (see vid). But with that said, the Kawi Ninja 1000 beat the 8th gen in a comparo of sport-tourers (I forget which publication) so if it had to be another sports-tourer I would want to take the Ninja 1000 for a test ride to see what it's all about. However, I'm extremely happy with the 8th gen and have no immediate plans to get rid of her.

I'd love to get the S1000RR, but I'd also like to be able to do longer trips, so I'd most likely get the S1000XR. Best of both worlds.

Well Gatorgreg getting yourself into shit again outside the forum are you?;-) Yes to many "Oh My God"! And to many revs on the engine for my taste. I have loved BMW inline 4's and the 195hp, or any inline 4 since that was my beginnings with Kawasaki. But, the price for what you rode was above $18,000. When you said that you will look at insurance you may get an above average response from you like "are you fucking kidding me." It will be at least 30-40% of your payment.

For me being a H.P. junkie back in the day and settling in for a sport tourer with my Gpz1100 at 123hp weighing almost the same or less as the VFR now. I was paying $120 a month in insurance on a inline 4 with any Kawi's serial # starting with "ZR" even though it was a detuned ZR1100 motor. I moved on to the Sv1000s due to cost again since it was the best under rated bike of 2003, and I got it new a year later new with 4 miles for $7200 new with the optional fairing, gel seat and other goodies. Base Model sold for $8,999. It was much lighter by a 120lbs and only 5 less H.P. without the weight loss than the Gpz! 7lbs=1hp that means I gained a hell of a lot.

The reason that I bought the VFR like I have stated are these after selling the Suzuki Sv1000s.
#1 Price- $8000 for a bike that had a MSRP of $12,999 base
#2 Insurance- $55 vs $145 for the inline Ninja 1000, and in history $18 more than the SV at $27 and $68 less than the inline Gpz1100 at $123
    #3 Quality of build
    #4 looks and controls
#5 Needing a bike that would last with low maintenance and cost, if I could not do it myself! (well that excludes the valve maintenance! ;-))

LOL - alright Bubba, I hereby challenge you to a duel! We'll get you set up for an S1000RR test ride with a microphone and see if you can avoid saying "Oh My God!" as many times as I did :glee:

Done! I will not say anything other than enjoying the ride at the end! I am a man of few words while riding! I internalize exhilaration and thank god for every ride and finally getting home! P.S. I am not religious! If you can get me set up in Utah I am in!

Haha, well you have to remember that other than a ride on a Hayabusa the day before I had never ridden anything with more power than my Interceptor. Kind of like going from a wooden roller coaster to riding Kingda Ka! But if you're used to riding Kawi GPZ's like you say you've had in the past than you'll probably be able to keep your cool :glee:

Might have to go with one of these - especially if I end up solarizing my retirement home (and doubly especially if they can fulfill that 500 mile range goal!).

Back to the OP, this kind of happened to me. My VFR was stolen, I got it back, but insurance totaled it. Not quite forced to trade, but similar. I loved my VFR and had no plans to trade it when it was taken. But to answer your question: a 2016 Daytona 675R.

My checklist of things a motorcycle needed to check off had changed since buying my 2014 vfr two years ago, and without the need for commuting duty or passenger comfort, I determined I could power through the few long days a year I get to ride longer distances. I've done 360+ mile days on a ZX7R and the 675R is more comfortable than that torture rack to be sure.

Basically, You will not hear me say anything on a ride no matter the rush since I do not have a mic. Even if you where to mod me up I always internalize my feelings like the pic you noted that I am not smiling. I will not pay that price to get that rush. We can get that with any other late model inline. I can pay $5,000 to $7500 to have that kinda rush from Honda, Suzuki or Yamaha on any model that they have produced in the past. Though I will say that you and I cannot handle that HP in everyday riding. Show me If you disagree with the gopro!

    :congratulatory:

If budget were not a concern and being a realist for everyday get about, from reading, I'd choose Africa Twin. From pure looks and having sat atop one (knowing full well I'd have to get that super tucked position down) a 2013 thru 2014 CBR600RR in Italian Red w/ CMBS.

As far as the Lightning, I'd wager that the VFR frame and swingarm is an excellent choice for an electric build. I was talked out of it even though an IT professor said he had funding and wanted me to start a parts list. After finding these pics a couple of weeks ago, I believe I was foiled again. Some douche argued that mounting the batteries where the tank was located would make our pig even more portly. I should have researched motors and would have probably come to the same conclusion as this builder. The tank would just house electronics, not much weight. The batteries would occupy the area directly underneath the gas tank, in the position of the air box, TBs, and forward cylinders. The other area would be for good ole Panasonic batteries with differential measurements to monitor each cell or bank. Attach transmission and motor to a novel mount with mount for the swingarm, VOILA!

Does an electric even need a transmission? Just curious

IIRC, the Lightning only has 1 gear, it's got a pretty big ass rear sprocket and it still hits over 200 (218)! I can't imagine what it would be like with 2 gears... lol

I believe the Zeros are also 1 gear (direct drive)

may be a little more bang for the buck fun/comfortable..
