Can drive chain have master link

I have been working on the 91 and found that the drive chain has a master link instead of being a rivet type chain
Is the master link chain acceptable on the VFR?
I see most talk about the rivet type chain
For that it is worth the chain is a D.I.D VX chain, not a bad looking chain but needs to have a link removed

 

It should be fine. I always preferred riveting them though. Just buy the tool and a new style master clip if it makes you feel safer.

 

Just make sure you put the clip on in the right direction.

 

Should be fine. I asked my Honda dealer about it. He said that is what he puts on his old CBX - RK brand. That's what I put on my Trophy 900 last time - must be 10,000-15,000 kms ago, now. Heavier bike with about the same power, no problems.

Just one question: why does it need to have a link removed?

 

I replaced my chain and sprockets over the winter. I asked for a clip style master. I've never had one fail in almost 60 years.

 

The chain looks good at the links, they all move with no kinks but I was thinking of removing a link to shorten the chain so I would have lots of chain adjustment
At this point the chain is on the loose side and if I measured to the right place on the chain guard it is telling me
the chain adjustment is near or at the limit

 

A chain can look good even though it's worn out. Count the links and make sure you have the correct number, 108 I believe. If you have the right number and it's that loose, it's time for a change.

In all the years of playing with bikes I have never replaced a street bike chain, probably because I haven't been able to ride much on the street. The one bike I always had new chains for was the old race bike, I guess I was mostly shortening chain on the old trail bikes.

 

Well I went and checked the 91's chain and sprockets
The stock front sprocket is a 16t and the rear is a 43 t, with a 112 link ( pin ) chain

I do have a question for the members

When you are adjusting the chain the book I have refers to the chain being worn out when the rear sprocket teeth are at the end of the little tab ( where there was a sticker at one time ) on the rear chain cover
Are they referring the the bottom of the sprocket tooth or the tip of the tooth?

 

Make sure you're checking slack with the rear suspension a bit compressed (rear wheel on the ground). If it's on a center stand you'll be seeing more slack than what the chain will actually be doing on the road.
