So I bought an 85 vf1000r a few weeks ago and began overhauling it. Unfortunately the starter on this thing is done. The only threads I can find about these things all say rebuild it but this one is beyond rebuilding since it's burnt up so bad there is damage to the insulator and parts of that don't come in a rebuild kit. Apparently as with every part on this bike the starter is discontinued. Can anyone tell me how I can get a starter for this thing or other starters from other more common bikes that will work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Unique to the 84 1000F and 85-86 1000R.

    Time for ebay.

Yeah I checked eBay all they have is rebuild kits and starter solenoids.
Every website I check offers the rebuild kit or individual pieces for the rebuild kit but not the parts I actually need to replace.

Yeah the second in the US in the description says not returns no refunds all parts from old bikes. It's $179 if it's broke your out of luck I'm not much of a gambling man lol. I keep finding sites with it listed but all of the say temporarily out of stock. I'm going to drive a few hours Saturday to bike scrap yard and keep my fingers crossed. I can't believe of all the cheap Chinese parts made they don't make this starter.

What? "vfr 1000"? There is no such thing.

Like stated earlier, for the U.S. the 84 VF1000F Interceptor and the 85-86 VF1000R share the same starter and that part number is unique to those bikes. I suspect the 84 1000R and 87 1000R that we didn't get in the states should also take the same starter, but I have no way to verify. Same goes for the rest of the VF1000F/F2 variants the U.S. didn't get. And I'd be really surprised if a 83 -85 VF700/750F starter didn't bolt right in, but they do not share the same number.

83-85 starter didn't work I tried it. All in all I called roughly 20 places looking for one. The lady at Rick's called me back and told me they found 1 it was the last one they had and doubted they would get anymore so I bought it. Every other place I called couldn't get it. So if any of you guys have 1 you are sitting on gold here in the states.

What was the fitment issue on the 83-85. Mount lugs not in the same spot? I suspect the 1000 starter is physically bigger/longer?
