Should I buy it??

I have the chance to buy a 93' VFR750 for $1900. He's firm on the price!!
28k original miles.

I has been laid down with scuffs and cracks in the fairings but the paint still looks great.

I can't tell, but I think the aftermarket muffler had dents in it.

Anyways, I have a chance to drive an hour from my house around 6pm to look at it and buy it, cause he has more guys coming to look at it later tonight.

But here's something that's quite interesting, he has already had 3 guys out to look at.
But when I asked him to repeat himself, he said he had 3 calls on it, but no one showed.

It has no leaks, rear swing arm and bearings are tight.
He's the third owner and he can't recall how many years he has had it.

Should I burn the gas ($32 both ways) and take the chance on it, or is his asking price kinda high for that much damage.

And the reason for the high cost for gas, is because I drive a 92' Firebird with a 8ft enclosed trailer. LOL

Check for oil leaks, dark or low brake fluid, cracks in the engine case, etc... That's a pretty good price at $1,900. A caveat though is that getting parts for it can be really inconvenient and most of the time really expensive. Even the honda dealership won't work on that bike because it's so old. You would have to either plan on becoming a mechanic or get to know a good local mechanic that can work with old bikes.

It does sound high for a damaged one. I paid $1000 Canadian (when it was worth less) for mine; straight, good runner, had higher miles but a Factory shift kit, Barnett Clutch, Corbin and original seats, the optional centerstand, a nice original rear cowl, a full top end gasket set just in case, a K&N filter in the stock airbox and new brakes all around. Needed tires and chain/sprockets though and the instrument cluster headlight and upper fairing stay were all irreparably damaged
If all it has wrong is rashed plastics that can be repaired (I wouldn't want to try to buy replacements), provided it is in good mechanical condition and given it has an aftermarket pipe it's probably worthwhile, or you could just spend the $3,000 ish for a non-trashed one and save yourself a lot of grief.

Been working on bikes for years and I know how expensive Honda VF or VFR parts run.
But looking at the pictures, its hard to tell what condition it's really in....

I think he took poor pictures on purpose!!

I love my VF500, and I was thinking of getting a VF750, but the gear driven cams is a plus with the VFR.

Well, I don't know what to do, cause I have somewhere to be today at 7:30, and if I cancel, I'm gonna feel bad.....

AHHHH, why does every bike have to be on a Thursday? lol

And I'll be sure to look it over with a fine tooth comb. Especially the R/R.

Any other tips that would be quite helpful?

Ask for better pics. I am always leary of ads with pictures taken in the dark.

I really can't ask for better pics, because he gets home around 6, and around 8 he has more sellers coming. But that's what he says.

And yes, I do at times ask for better pics of which many sellers do, or they give you the He Ho.

Well, what was the outcome? Was it a great bike with minor cosmetic issues, or a basket case he was trying to unload on you?

yeah do tell. That'd be a tough sell to me cause it's hard enough to get cool aftermarket goodies for my 98. Getting one even older would bug the piss out of me. I had an 84 VF 500 that had some issues so I unloaded it to a kid who said he wanted something to rebuild. It was definitely that.

Huh??? My dealer(s) nearby happily work on my 92 very cheaply and efficiently. Shenandoah Honda and Loudoun Motorsports in VA.

Well, I think we got our answer. Signed up Sept 25th, last here October 9th, and no response. I think he tried us on for a week and a half and decided to become a part of somebody else's family (sniff).... given the suspect nature of the pics probably better that he didn't join us on those terms, though.

Hope that at least we saved somebody a headache.

Ouch!!! Hard words there......

After really thinking it over and seeing that the 2 brothers exhaust was trashed (the whole can was crinkled!!) and the the fairing was indeed cracked more than what he described, I told myself to save up for a minty one.

I've had and still have nice bikes (if you can even call them that), but I've sold all my mint bikes in the past, and really... I deserve a minty one, and by golly, my father even told me so.

That is, if I don't find myself a nice 3rd gen Trans am or Formula.

My 92' bird is getting tired...but anyways, thanks again for all the advice and I'm pretty much hanging out on the 1st gen VF section of the site till I get my next VF.....who knows, I might get a 3rd or 5th gen Viffer

And bad news....my VF is having problems. So, bottom line is, this time I'm looking for a bike that has no problems from the get-go!!!

I agree, I feel you are way better off to pay more for a low mile, pristine condition bike. Good luck with your search.

go look at it and ride it take cash with you. If it runs fine no leaks the consider buying it maybe lower the price then when you get it home put slick50 in it will add about 5hp awesome!!

Nope....I'm holding out. I'm getting tired of getting inexpensive bikes that need considerable amount of work and money... I'd rather ride then wrench.

I've been buying and selling from my garage for the past 5 and half years, and I feel I need a break. Plus the work on my own bikes...Ughhh

So far, I've sold 9-11 motorcycles in that time and 4 mopeds, a scooter and a dirtbike. Granted it may not seem like a lot, but there's a lot of junk out there that you can't make a dime off of.

My last bike took in a little over 1 grand profit..and that was in just 2 weeks.

Too bad there's not any of those anymore. Once this gas crises started, bike prices have been skyrocketing!!!

And as we speak, I'm looking for a Viffer
