TOTAL MILES: 94
TOTAL RIDE TIME: 2:10
TRAFFIC MAY BE MODERATE TO HEAVY WITH LOCAL SKI RESORTS OPEN. MAY RUN LONGER THAN EXPECTED END TIME

If I may interject.....Ortega is only like 25 miles long....give or take few miles. That ride was kinda more for a meetup, and see new faces, than ride a long ride....I did ride 75 miles to get to the meetup spot though...
Oh, and Ortega is pretty easy to ride, especially since it was repaved and widened. If you really want some riding, do this ride with Shayne....he is a good rider, sets a good pace, and is great at herding the cats. Or head down to SD county sometime...we have lots of nice twisties, with low traffic....in the morning at least.
I must have met you on the Ortega ride....my memory is at a loss without a pic though.
Sorry guys, I just remembered that I have Battle Assemblies (new name for Drill weekend!) this weekend in city of Bell but I am up for the next one. Have a good and safe ride!!! I am looking forward to the next ride!![]()
We'll see if I get my forks back and the bike put together in time.

That looks like an awesome ride! I have plans with family already that day though, sorry, wish I could make it! Just out of cusiosity, how difficult would this ride be say on a scale from 1-10?? Keep in mind my 3 month long skill level.Anyway, wish I could make it, better take some good photos so I can be envious!

to answer the newbie's questions, this is about twice as long as the Ortega run. The first section is a four-lane sweeping uphill section that turns into a two-lane twisty edge of a cliff road that winds up to Running Springs. From there it's progressively tighter curves, with a few hairpins until you reach the summit and the 'artic circle', where it briefly turns into a passing lane autobahn with nice banking turns and occasionally debris in roadway. Once we hit Big Bear it's congestion for 10 miles, followed by 40 miles of two-lane forest roads that wind down to Riverside.
This route is BEST in Spring/Fall when the traffic is light to non-existent. Because of the snow-tourists and water/ice on the roadway, it's more of a leasurely sport-TOURING type of ride in winter.
Scale of 1-10, (with Ortega being a 5) I'd say this route is a 8 and might be best to attack for the first timers later in Spring.
good to know. Thanks!!!
WEATHER UPDATE
As of this morning the weather forecast is calling for Santa Ana winds to hit the Big Bear area through Sunday afternoon. Unless this changes I may need to postpone this ride until next weekend. Big Bear is NOT a fun place to ride with 60 mph gusts on cliffside mountain roads.

I agree, Hey all S. Cali VFRW riders if you guy intrested Jason and I will plan for a RIDE and DINE in the next couple week. We eill ride in the east county, Paloma, Julian or where ever we all agree, After the ride we will go back to Jakie Chan Hacienda for a BBQ. Let me know who in...................
Dr. Long, I'm in! A couple of weeks from now is a good time for me. Besides an excuse to drink beer and BBQ is always a good reason to get together. I have some tri tip I marinated in the freezer just dying to get BBQ'd...

I am IN! Hey Chuck, lets get all the Riverside/San Bernardino riders together and head over as a group!keep us posted Long...
Sorry folks, no sense chancing it with 80 mph gusts.
A HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM PST SUNDAY.
HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED IN NEVADA WILL CAUSE LOCAL STRONG GUSTY SANTA ANA WINDS THROUGH SUNDAY. GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE AND SPREAD SOUTH TODAY AND CONTINUE AT TIMES THROUGH SUNDAY. THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE THROUGH AND BELOW MOUNTAIN CANYONS AND PASSES WHERE WIND GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH ARE LIKELY. ISOLATED GUSTS TO NEAR 80 MPH WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH AND BELOW THE CAJON PASS AND IN THE SANTA ANA MOUNTAINS.
Just when you start patting yourself for braving and commanding 60mph winds on a mountain road along comes a freak 80mph gust crosswind on a decreasing radius uphill blind left hander and it's air suit time. http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_...=vimeo.com&sho substitute vfr for skis.
