Hwy 229 pics

Hey guys. I got out the other day and snapped a lot of pics of Hwy 229 outside Creston. The photos will take you from Creston, towards Hwy 58. Not much commentary on this one.

we're heading to those hills way off in the distance...

Here comes the 'entrance' to the fun stuff.

The next pic is at the top of the hill and I have taken several pics going down this hill before so I skipped the pics to enjoy the ride this time. I clocked it off though. It's about a one mile chicane down to the bottom where it T's off to Hwy 58.

Last pic coming up. This is the end of this section of road. Tori and I are in the planning phase of getting a video done so look for it before too much longer.

Just after this, I decided to ride harder as I had just been putting along snapping pics. Anyway, I took a right onto Hwy 58 headed back towards Margarita. I noticed the handling immediately in the rear tire felt very weird so I slowed down and thought ot myself, I need to check my tire pressure when I get back in town. Anyway, did mostly straight up riding down to SLO then called Tori to meet for lunch. He noticed my tire looked low right away. Come to find out, I had picked up a nail and the ride had worn the center of my tire to near nada. As fate would have it, Tori had been practicing mounting bike tires at work and there was a bike shop across the street where I guy pulls tires off wrecked bikes and sells them. Long story short, I'm running Dunlop 208 in the rear for the first time ever, and for $75 total. The tire had very little wear. The little rubber thingies were still on it (until I rode home). Anyway, now I get to see how they compare to the conti's. I must say the conti did pretty damn well considering I was riding a flat. I didn't realize the sides were that stiff.

Still, looks like a sweet road to ride..

that's what it always reminds me of, too. the secret is out with all the bike riders, though. on Sunday's you have to watch for cruisers lollygagging all over the road and Sunday drivers like the middle the best.

I actually washed my bike not long before that ride, but I ride a lot. It's hard to keep it immaculate. Oh, left mirror didn't make it through my low-side back in Dec. Been toying with the idea of changing to signal integrated or carbon fiber or both or just y2k style. Anything but the condom mirrors. Needless to say, I have not decided yet. ;)

You hit the icon that looks like a small photo with mountains, it's yellow. You have to temporarily allow scripted windows. Then it comes up with a user requester for the url to the pic. I dump all mine on photbucket as it auto crops them down to a decent size for quicker DL and I dont print any of them anyway.

Excellent choice for todays ride. The last part of the road in that rollercoaster section is the sweetest part, especially since they repaved a bunch of years ago. REG thanks again GREG

Reg, I'm gonna be down there on that route April 14th with the Pashnit tour. We come from the San Jose area down the coast on Friday (13th), ride the SLO/Paso Robles area on Saturday, them go back up the coast on Sunday. We rode that same road last year, I was amazed at what a sweet ride 229 was. I've done two tours with Pashnit, and when we did the Central California tour last year there were at least 10 "locals" that joined us on the tour for the day. We went on 58, then on to Parkfield, through Paso Robles, and back to SLO. Let me know if you (or any other VFR guys) are interested and I'll get you the hotel name so you can meet up. Like I said, the locals were welcomed into the group...

I'd love to go with you guys but I'm in Missouri from Apr 6-15th then I'm straight back to work. Tori will be at a track day on the 13th I think. Not sure about Brian. (His bike is still in pieces) SLOAV8R might want to hook up with you guys. He and XXFirefighter ride all over all the time. You can also check out the yahoo group SLOriders and let the guys know when you'll be coming through. Someone will always be ready for a ride, and that should be a great time to come through here. Too bad I'm gone. I love meeting other members from VFRworld.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, been really busy with work and a car project lately. The tour will be staying at the Best Western, 1895 Monterey St in SLO. If you show up there Saturday morning around 8:00 you can meet folks before we push off. Last year we got back into SLO around 5:00. Here's a link to the tour page so you get some idea of possible routes. It's all pretty flexible, and like I said earlier, the tour folks love to have locals come along.
