Brake light switch

After the guy behind me commented "You didn't touch the brakes all day" I
investigated ...

The front brake lever no longer turns on the brake lights.
The back brake pedal does so the bulbs are OK.
I can hear the click when I pull the front lever, that used to light up the
back ...

Any obvious things to look for before I take the bike to the shop.

Re: Brake light switch

Mac,

First of all, try using your rear brake a little more. Sure, the front brake is stronger, but especially in a panic situation you want to use both, even with linked brakes. Trail braking can help you through corners smoother without the worry of washing out the front end.

The good news is you can fix this very easily. The switch that turns on your brake light is right next to the lever. If I remember right it is plugged into two wires you can pull off and held in place by one screw, maybe two. You can replace this part in five minutes easy!

Be sure to use your rear brake until you get it fixed. Hold or pump the rear brake at stops so you don't get rear ended!

Let us know how it goes.

A service manual, a test light and an ohmmeter.

You can usually download the manual. You should be able to buy the other two
for under $20.00. You don't really need a Snap-On test light or a Fluke
multimeter.

Don't waste you time with that. You can bring it to me.

For $100.00 I will screw it up for you and you won't have to wait two weeks.

And if I do it, you won't have to risk some yoyo at the shop dropping it.

You can just park it, I will screw it up and then you can pay me and get back
on it and leave.

You won't miss more than 5 minutes riding time.

I ended up with a paper clip.
That did the trick.
I disconnected the switch (which I hadn't realised was separate - I assumed
it was integral with the grip)
Connected the two wires with a paperclip, used the key as a switch & the
brake light as a test light.
Switch is now ordered.
Will be delivered by post within 24 hours.

Now this did temp me ...
But the $1600 to ship the bike to the US, the exorbitant insurance for a
foreign national and the $1600 to ship home put me off. No offence, I'm sure
you are an excellent mechanic but the overheads are against you for UK work
:)

And the 3 week transport time :)

But thanks - I do appreciate the offer - and when I'm in your area I'll buy
you a beer.
