Valve Adjustment - Chicago Area

I'm new to the VFR list, but here I am looking for help already. I
have been a member of the Sabmag list for almost 10 years, and I know
I've spoken with a few of you over the years at the Slimy Crud ride.

I have resigned myself to having a dealer mechanic do the valve
adjustment on my 1999 VFR, and I'm looking for suggestions on one in
the Chicago area that knows what they are doing. I did check valve
clearances 20K miles ago, and a couple were close to needing
adjustment, so I'm expecting them to be out of spec this time around.
Adjusting is beyond my abilities without help, thus the dealer
request. I did talk to Elmhurst Honda House, and they sounded
knowledgeable and almost reasonable, but I don't know anything else
about them.

OTOH, if there was someone with the bucket of shims, the knowledge and
desire (can't imagine why) that wants to help do the work, I'm game
for a Winter Maintenance Clinic at my place in Naperville!

Thanks,

Dan

Once you get past the intimidation factor, it's really not that big
of a deal. You've checked your valve clearances already, so you know
how to do all the difficult mechanical parts. The only hard part that
you haven't done yet is the algebra necessary to choose the correct
shim thickness. Conveniently enough, Honda provides the formula
necessary and all you need to do is drop one or two measurements into
it. Follow the directions in your manual, and double-check your math
(good records are quite, quite useful here, so checking your
clearances twice before you do anything else is a really good idea,
IMO) and everything's fine.

If you were doing this in early Feb., I'd probably offer to come up
and work on it with you. As it is, I'm booked for three weeks.

later,
Johnj

Happy New Year you VFRiders! I got on my bike today!!!
