Those that use Spamfighter advice. VFRC
Tried to not have to use it but am getting spamed out.
But it often fires VFR list mail,(VFRC.), even mine, into the spam folder and as a lot of you will know, the unblock "feature" just freezes it. Is there any way to set up the list as an okay domain etc, to allow mails in? Or a better and simpler spam filter? TIA. ***************************************** Steve "Spider" Enfield 87 VFR 750 Sydney, Australia www.ozvfr.net :-) -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. It has removed 61 spam emails to date. Paying users do not have this message in their emails. Personally, I disdain people who have to use gimmicks such as spamblocker and who expect other folks to jump through hoops to contact them. (It usually means they have sloppy personal security.) I have better things to do than waste time on them. This advice is for people who want to do things 'right' the first time around; Your first line of defense is never EVER give out your email address except to those that absolutely have to have it. This will keep those who abuse addresses from getting it. Do not allow friends or family to send you *anything* by putting your email address into a site, including American Greetings. Raise Hell if you must but get that point across. Conversely, do not forward /anything/ unless you have trimmed off all the extraneous email addresses of other recipients. Teach others to do this. Next, have a number of different email accounts for different purposes. I have setup on this machine 16 different ones for my own use. That includes one designated for banking, one for ebay, yet another for PayPal. Then there are several for different personal interests, including from match.com, and this list as well. All these do not include the one I give out to only close friends and family. Keep them separate so if it does become abused you can cut it off and use another without having to change all your contacts. Small detail to keep in mind; most spammers that auto-generate spam use dictionary generators. The vast majority of these DO NOT USE A PERIOD! If your name is 'Joe Blow' and you have an account at gmail.com then set it up as joe.blow@xxxxxx That small detail alone will stop 99%+ of auto generated spam. Avoid using Yahoo Mail or HotMail, the companies running them actually make money by selling your email address to third parties. (Didn't you ever wonder why it's 'free'?) If you need additional email accounts that don't cost anything, go to gmail.com and sign up. It's been my experience that it works well and NO ads delivered to your inbox. For an email client I used to use Navigator till AOL bought out the company. I then went to Mozilla, and later to Seamonkey. Using Outlook Express as your email client is asking for TROUBLE in my opinion. Every code monkey on the planet looking to send mal-formed mail codes for it, simply because most people use it because it's 'free'. My 2¢. Do with it as you will. _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

mails in? Or a better and simpler spam filter? << I use Postini through my ISP which works great. It catches 99.9% of the spam and almost never blocks any email that it shouldn't. It even catches virus laded email. All of this happens on the ISP server before it even reaches my computer. I am very happy with this product. __________________________ Mick McHam Houston, TX '01 ST1100 ABS, STOC# 1134 '00 VFR800FI http://www.hal-pc.org/~mmcham _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

For the original poster: there seems to be a new version out there from
SpamFighter, dated TODAY that seems to address some of the issues you are having. T, > Your first line of defense is never EVER give out your email address > except > to those that absolutely have to have it. Teach others to do this. While I generally agree with your points, it is virtually impossible to keep an email address free from spam. Even email addresses that are not used at all, other than for receiving mail like for instance this mailinglist will eventually and over time get spam. I have heaps of email addresses on my own server using different domains, and while most of them are inactive ALL of them receive spam. Even those that have never been used to send and have never been given to anyone or anything. Not that it bothers me too much, as the server side filtering catches 99% so I don't have to look at it. My primary domain received 385,791 emails over the last 12 months. Only 80,410 of them passed to the various mailboxes. That means 80% of mail received by my mailserver was spam. And it is only getting worse. > If you need additional email accounts that don't cost anything, go to > gmail.com and sign up. It's been my experience that it works well and NO ads > delivered to your inbox. Yeah, if you do not care about your privacy, please do. Google sole purpose in life is to make money by collecting personal data from you. As much as they can and then some. They index your email. Your search behavior is linked to your user account and stored it for at least 3 years before it is anonymized. They have a good marketing machine, but they do not give a rats ass about your privacy or anything about you for that matter. If there is a company that should be avoided like it is the plague by people that care for their privacy etc., it's Google. If you don't worry about your privacy, why worry about some spam?
