RE: Riding Gear and Cool Weather..
Mr. Goss -
I've heard stories of guys riding all day in 35F weather in a roadcrafter or similiarly constructed snow mobile suit without electrical clothing.. Although some people feel the cold worst than others, I suspect they are pulling our legs about the degree of comfort. No matter how good a winter suit you buy, you will never be able to retain sufficent body heat to stay comfortable in 35F rides for longer than an hour.. I can not recommend heated vest and heated grips strongly enough if you plan to ride in weather cooler than 45F for any length of time.. I can ride with my road crafter with a widder electric vest in this kind of weather regularly and am pretty comforable.. I also installed a set of heated grips from www.dualstar.com. The heated vest took 10 minutes to install and cost $150.00 with the bimetallic controller.. The grips took 4 hours to install and cost $40.00, including the relay to disconnect power when the ignition is off.. The weakest link in a modern motorcycles performance is the rider, especially in my case. I don't spend much on performance modifications - I do spend money to be comfortable. You could probably duplicate this with a less expensive suite from Tourmaster, H-Gerike, ect and the mods I just suggested.. Again, your mileage may vary. These changes extended my riding season to 10 months here in Dallas.. I don't ride with ice on the pavement and I don't ride in Texas in August. No electrics, just a good jacket that will block ALL the cold wind here in Montana. I used to have one that gave me very good protection in a get off a few years ago. It was not leather. https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr _______________________________________________ Vfr mailing list Vfr (AT) cs (DOT) wisc.edu For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |
