Michelin Pilot Road 2

Hello all,

Has anyone tried these new tires? There seems to be a lot of hype around
these and I wonder if it's warranted.

My front tire is showing some sidewall cracks and gave me a bit of headshake
on deceleration. Time for a change up!

Cheers,
Patrick

yeah, what's with that headshake? I've got the same bike, and I cannot go
hands-free on decel except for maybe a bike length, yet I can go for miles on my
other bikes, tires good or not.

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

Hmm... I assumed if the steering bearings were okay, it was almost always a
tire problem.

Have you checked for any play or notches in the steering head? (I haven't
yet, since my tires look old).

Your suspension preloads could also not be setup right. If you don't mind
me asking...how heavy are you?

I guess I was actually asking forsaleinfl dude. You shoudln't have
headshake unless your tires are way cupped.

Just about the same weight. 6"1", 175. And the tires never (so far) have an
effect on it..right now I've got about 1500 miles on a set of D204s, and even
with 5500 miles on a set I still get the shakes if I remove my hands.

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

I replaced the steering head bearings with tapered
roller bearings in my 94 - no more shake on decel -
actually no more shake anytime.

Where'd you get them? Honda dealer? Made by Honda?

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

Dude, this isn't exactly news...If you were to search the archives you
would find a load of information about tapered roller bearings,
sources therefor and even some Honda part numbers. Apparently, they
were OEM on some dirt bikes as well as Goldwings, but happen to be the
same dimensions as the VFR's OEM ball bearings. (Or you could just
look on my Web site, but what's the fun in that?!?)

You can buy them from Honda if you like, but as Honda just buys them
from someone else anyway, why? Most people in the 'States seem to use
AllBalls Racing or CBR Bearing Co., but most bearings can be sourced
from any good automotive bearing/seal supplier.

I prefer the sealed lower bearings (which means no extra seal is
required) I have only found at Moore Speed Racing in the UK, but I'm
sure even these are available elsewhere...

John,

What's the name of that bearing supplier on Western Ave. in Gardena?
Have used All Balls and CBR. Just for convenience sake.

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

Sorry, my bearing epiphany had not yet occurred and I was, therefore,
still wallowing in ignorance when I lived in LA... But, FWIW, Western
Ave. in Gardena is EXACTLY the neighborhood I'd expect to find just
such an automotive bearing and seal supply house!

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

About 4-5 message up, August Banks said that he highly recommends the tire.

"Just replaced my first front of the Pilot Road 2. I have a very high
opinion of them for my commuting needs. Lasted 18k miles (98% commuting),
while the Pilot Road 1 lasted about 14k miles. That's a 28% improvement in
life, for 20% more money. Plus the grip and handling were much improved. I
would highly recommend it."

Re: Michelin Pilot Road 2

Well, I've got the new Michelin on on the front now and I couldn't get it to
headshake/wobble/weave on me... tried going downhile w/engine braking and
hands off (but close!) and it was very stable.

Anyway, the tire is still VERY new, still have all of the little hairs, so,
time will tell.

Cheers,
Patrick
