Sounds like it's time to do an USD fork swap. Check vfrdiscussion.com - there are several guys there who have put inverted forks on there VFRS. If you want some of the best brakes in the biz, you can fit YZFR1 boingers with radial calipers.

Seems brakes and suspension are the weakest areas on my VFR. May be that I'm just used to full-on race setups, but my brakes were very anemic and the suspension seems to be barely adequate. After changing out the front with steel lines, HBC HH pads, and AP600 fluid the brakes are acceptable now...would still like more, but I can't find a SuperHawk front end to swap out. I hear that's the real cure for the brakes. I have an Ohlins rear on my old FZR and love it.....but, damn, they're pricey. Any suggestions? Racetech valves and spings for the front? What about FOX for the rear? -Mac

Race tech up front with springs to suit your weight and riding style ...
Penske in the rear with springs and valving to match your weight and riding
style. Penske unlike Olins will custom build the shock for YOU ... no extra
charge.

98 and 2000 bikes both ... 130,000 miles and 3 rebuilds .. about $80 for the
rebuilds each

Hyperpro in the rear on the 2001 (sourced from what was the wilbers
dealer). They will customize the spring rate, valving and length to
match your needs at no extra cost. No rebuilds yet, but very
satisfied for the range of weight/conditions I ride through.
I'll be changing the front springs and valves this year when I get
some time to. I was planning on going with the hyperpro setup from
Klaus since the rear has worked out so well.
