Re: "97 R/R
I've got a '95 4th gen, and am on my 3rd R/R.? First one, stock of course, failed at about 5 years and 44K miles.? I replaced it with a stock one which lasted about 3 yrs.? The present one is another stock direct replacement, but has small cooling fins on it which the first two didn't have, and has lasted about 5 years and 30K miles.? I just carry a stock R/R with me when traveling long distances, and recently installed a little?Kuryakyn voltage monitor to kind of keep an eye on things and hopefully?tell me?when bad things START happening, not after.? Otherwise, the bike has been trouble free, now?at 93K miles

However, when I was a fulltime bicyclist, I had more close calls than I care to remember. Back then, I was younger, fitter and much much loonier. The average cager really isn't ready for someone dressed in lycra, a silly helmet and a weensy bicycle to chase him, catch him at a light and proceed to drag him from his car. Of course, back then, I weighed about 178 of solid muscle, had great endurance and no scruples whatsoever. These days, I am more content to turn lawyers loose on their ass. I really know how to ruin their day. The bad news it that the twit who cut you off will never know how much her cup of coffee will have cost because her insurance company won't bother telling her. And you may end up screwed out of your deductible in the process. If she claims she did not cause your crash, and she was not ticketed for any offense, her insurance may just tell you to fly a kite. Sorry to sound cynical, but it's her word against yours and even though you have witnesses, they might be willing to bet that you wouldn't pursue any legal action. Anyone have one? Or know a source? (None on ebay) I called Two Bros and was told they do not manufacture this part anymore. I'm currently running a low mount but would like to show off the single sided swingarm. Would another brand's pipe extension work (Staintune)? Part number/source? Anyone have the required dimensions? Perhaps I could have one made? You are, however, correct. No statistically significant testing has been done to suggest that the Yamaha R1 RR is better than the new "improved" Honda RR but I personally know of two listers who have had the upgraded RR fail in about a year of service. I do not know of anyone who has done the R1 conversion who has had a failure. While the samples are too small to draw any conclusions from, I decided that Honda (or their supplier Shindengen or both) did not know what the f**k they were doing for years so why should I trust them now? On the other hand, according to a Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/MotoGuzzi/Ducati mechanic I know and trust (he is actually a mechanical engineer from S. Africa), Yamaha's electronics and electricals are far superior to all of the others, especially Honda which he describes as crap. He said they have more Honda electrical problems than all of the others combined. So, when I got serious about fixing the electrical gremlins, I went with Yamaha and could not be happier. BTW, if anyone reading this note does the R1 RR conversion, the one I used (along with Capt Chris) was an 04-06 unit. I can't speak for the others. I do know that the latest R1s have a smaller RR and it is located INSIDE THE AIRBOX (great idea!) to keep it cool. I'm not sure if it would work on a VFR since the location of the RR restricts its airflow. It may work but I cannot say for sure. Incidentally, to use the R1 RR you have to cut about 1/2" off of their very large fins for it to fit behind the cowl. Even having done that, it runs cool! This past weekend it was in the high 80s and my RR never went about 115F. The old Honda one would get so hot you could not hold your finger on it for more than a fraction of a second. I agree with you. Putting a PC fan on it is not a real solution. The fan "MAY" help but the real problem is a flawed RR design. Vic < that I have. (Nor is there any real evidence that a PC fan prolongs the life of any reg/rec, but perhaps that is a topic for another day...)
