Someone took the wind outta my sails

I was buzzing along the interstate, when all of a sudden I thought I was out of gas.* MPH dropped about 40 (from 105 to 65) - but it didn't drop further.* It held steady at 65 and in a few minutes could do 75, but I didn't try to go back up.* It happened in the middle of a 50 mile trip.
My 50 mile return trip was in the light rain at night, so I didn't push it - was able to stay with traffic at 55-65.
Ok - any experience with something like this?* I'd like to use the bike for a 160 mile (each way) journey this weekend.

Re: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Could be something as simple as a dirty fuel filter
restricting flow of gas to the carburators...If you
haven't replaced the fuel filter lately, this would be
the first thing I would check.

Re: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Hmmm - I had thought maybe a vapor lock, but I did fill*up the tank 15 miles before the mystery meltdown.* Sounds simple enough.

Re: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Sounds like it might be a fuel delivery problem possibly relating to
tank vacuum or a pinched line. Had the tank off lately? One time I had
to pull over and open the tank every few miles till I got home as one of
the lines was pinched clogged and you hear the vacuum when you opened
the tank. Those would be the places I would start.

RE: Someone took the wind outta my sails

I'd agree with this, especially with it occurring at "high speed" where you
suck fuel faster. After an extended ride at speed open the gas cap right
after you stop ... is it hard to open like there is vacuum in there? If so,
you have pinched a vent line which isn't letting air back into the tank to
fill the space of used fuel.

Fix it now. Left unchecked even for a relatively short time and you can
have trouble. I actually failed a tank on my '98 VFR after I pinched the
vent line before a trip. Only stopping to fill the tank was definitely a
contributor, but it actually fatigue cracked the tank above the seat about
1200 miles in. So much for "I'll pull it apart and fix it when I get home".
I was not noticeably fuel limited up to 80mph.

A plugged filter could also slow the fuel, so check that too.

Good luck.

Carl

Re: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Thanks for the advice.
Ok - I've replaced the fuel filter.* The old one did not seem clogged, but it was too opaque to tell what it's condition was without breaking it open.
Now it's really dyin'.* I think I pinched the supply tube just after the valve - and then I accidentally had the valve shut off when I cranked 'er up.* Did not make it the 1/3d mile to the gas station for new petrol before it sputtered.
Removed the seat, lifted the tank out, adjusted the lines, made sure the valve was on (vertical), and it's cranking but not turning over.
If it doesn't start tomorrow morning, I'm going to pull all the spark plugs and give it a good look-see there.* Could it be limping along on three cylinders?*
Any short list of steps to see if each plug is getting a spark?
Rob

Re: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Hey Bill,
Not sure what a PC II is - is that like a Kaypro II (bad computer joke)?* Is it aftermarket?* If so, nah, my bike is pretty much stock...* 'Cept for the Corbin seat and the throttlemeister.* And the scratches.

I have a 1998 VFR 800FI and had something similar happen....I was driving at
about 80-90 when my red FI light came on, the bike "jerked down" to 40 and
then Jerked back up to 65 and the red FI light went out. I also noticed that my
clock time was fucked up so it must have been some intermitent electrical
short. I was riding in very light rain. It also happened once when I was not riding
in the rain. I have no clue as to what is going on with the bike. I was
wondering if it might be the PC II connectors or CPU module?
What do you think? Do you have a PC II installed on your bike ?
Bill

Fw: Someone took the wind outta my sails

Update:* Supply tube was pinched (after installing new fuel filter).* Unpinched it, drained the tank 9/10ths of the way, added 2 gallons of BP's finest.* My dad was an Amoco user.* Bike started.* Need to do the road test next....
*
Hope the gas doesn't stall my lawnmower ;^P
